Joel Bulger Cancer Fund

$18,050 of $15,000 goal

Created August 29, 2017
Joel is my uncle. The youngest uncle on my mother's side in a family of 8.  I am the oldest child of the next generation, so Joel is more like a big brother to me.  Only 9 years separate us.  When Joel was 25, he moved in with my family to help us during my father's hospice care at home.  My dad was only 39, and he was dying from a brain tumor.  I don't know too many 25 year olds who would do something like that.

Joel works hard.  He works when he is hurt.  He works when he is tired.  He is always there for anyone who asks, and he doesn't take any malarky.  Well, he takes a little malarky, and he dishes it right back.

Joel is still working his regular job at The Mark Twain House & Museum, but due to his chemo, and the rigors of that treatment, has had to give up the many side jobs he takes on to make ends meet.  He has insurance, and a very high deductable.  The lost income on top of the high cost of cancer treatment will quickly put Joel behind.

When Joel was diagnosed, I called my former co-workers at The Mark Twain House -- some are still there, some have moved on.  Without exception, every one of them asked, "How can we help?"

As a result, on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, we will present "The Adorable Care Act: An Evening of #FakeNews".  All ticket sale proceeds from the event will go to support Joel's medical and living expenses.  For tickets go to: http://fakenews.brownpapertickets.com

If you cannot attend the event, please make a donation.  If you can attend, get your tickets.   And, if you can attend, and want to give a little more, we encourage you to do so.

Joel's prognosis is good.  He is strong.  And we want him to beat this, so we don't want him to worry about money.  Not while he is trying to heal.  Help us support Joel to do just that.

Hello, Everyone!

Let's see if we can get Joel to $15,000 or even $20,000! Today, Susan Campbell wrote about Joel and our event to support him. His spirits are high, his blood work is great, and he is almost done with chemo. Help us bring this home so he can focus on healing, and not on bills.

You can follow the link below to Susan's article:

Thank you!

Tonight is the night for "The Adorable Care Act: An Evening of #FakeNews with Sea Tea Improv. We are selling tickets right up to the start of the event at 7pm at The Mark Twain House & Museum. Tickets are $25 and 100% of the proceeds go to Joel's Cancer Fund.

For tickets go here: http://fakenews.brownpapertickets.com/

When I fundraise for organizations, I often say "I don't want to be piggy." When I fundraise for an amazing human being, I don't care if I am piggy.

We have beat our initial fundraising goal of $5,000. Ticket sales for the event so far are just over $2,000. Originally, I wanted to raise 10K. Truth is, I really would like to raise 14K, the amount of Joel's deductible. I think we can do it.

We got this far on gifts large and small from lots of loving folks. Now, you can help us blow this out of the water.

Imagine if Joel could focus wholly on fighting cancer knowing he can cover his bills? You can help us make that happen.

Thank you for your love and support.

Wow. In less than 2 weeks, our friends and family have beat our $5,000 goal to support Joel.

This fundraiser is running in tandem with ticket sales for The Adorable Care Act: An Evening of #FakeNews with Sea Tea Improv. The Mark Twain House & Museum has donated the space, Salute restaurant has donated the food, Sarmentos Importers is donating the wine, and some of Hartford's top journalists and improv performers have donated their time to make you laugh, and to bring us together to love Joel and support his battle vs cancer.
