Joe Self’s get well soon

This page is to help out joe self. For those of you that don’t know his back story here’s a little to catch you up on the battle. In 1999 joe was diagnosed with a very rare cancer of the jaw that needed surgery immediately however without insurance he knew this was not a possibility for him. He waited until he had insurance in 2002 he had the operation to remove the cancer which involves losing his entire jaw. The team of doctors attempted to construct him a jaw so he could live a relatively normal life. His body rejected the jaw and it had to be removed. After the difficult recovery joe managed to learn to eat, drink, talk and live without a jaw for 16 years. Until this year when he learned the cancer had returned and was more extensive then before. He was referred to Emory where a team of doctors tried to figure out the best path to take. The team included a plastic surgeon and an ENT who performed a twenty one hour operation to try and remove the cancer and reconstruct a jaw made from bone and muscles from his arm and leg. After all the work the doctors had done after 47 days the jaw rejected and died again and had to be removed. Joe endured all of this and more spending 47 days in the hospital trying to heal from infection and trauma. Joe now lives with a feeding tube and trache that will probably be a constant for the rest of his life. Even after all of this more operations are already scheduled the next one being on October 30th to try and repair all the damage. This will be his SEVENTH operation since July.
Joe has always been a positive person just happy to be around people and I know that this is emotionally hard on him. I also know that asking for help is not something he wants to do but everyone needs help sometimes. With all that is going on with joe he has been unable to work and being that he lives alone all of his hospital and home bills are adding up quickly with nobody to help him. Joe could use all his family and friends help in this very difficult time. Every little bit would make such a difference even if it’s $5. Please pass this along to anyone and everyone you know and please pray that the next operations go well.
Thank you!
