Burien Seahurst Park Beach Restoration - Joan McGilton Memorial
A group of friends and fellow community leaders have come together to propose a memorial rock and plaque to commemorate former Burien Mayor Joan McGilton's unique and essential leadership in the master planning and funding for the restoration of the beach at Seahurst Park to improve marine habitat for salmon and other endangered species and to create a field classroom, picnic and play areas for people of all ages to enjoy.
The Burien City Council has approved the installation of a memorial rock with plaque on the restored beach that resulted from Joan's hard work, dedication and perseverance.  The funds will provide for the purchase, machining, transportation and placement of the rock along with a 12" x 12" bronze plaque as shown in the attached photos.  The City of Burien Park's Department will coordinate and manage the location and placement of the rock.
The memorial plaque and rock will be purchased as soon as the funds are available with placement within several weeks after they are ready with a goal of placement by early next year.  The funds will be collected and disbursed by the Environmental Science Center, the establishment of which was also another of Joan's contributions in her pursuit of environmental education.  Contributions will be tax-deductible under IRS - 501(C)3 guidelines because gifts are made to a certified charity.  Please keep a copy of your donation for tax-deductible purposes.

Last week the JMM rock selection sub-committee made a rock shopping field trip to the Marenakos Rock Center in Issaquah. We knew that we wanted a very unique rock, not ordinary, and very special like Joan. We found it! a good size “glacial erratic” rock with some nice green and gold tone colors, likely breccia rock formed in the tectonic fault strike zone between the North American and Juan de Fuca plates. Next week the rock artists at Marenakos will assess the rock and prepare the best approach to machining it to receive the 12” x 12” bronze plaque. In a few weeks the rock will be placed by Marenakos at it’s location at Seahurst Park at the beginning of the north pathway that overlooks the beach restoration. The plaque will be installed/unveiled in September at a special beach day celebration hosted by the Environmental Science Center, so stay tuned!

We are pleased to let our donors and friends of Joan's know that we picked up the completed plaque this week from Fraser Bronze Foundry in Marysville. The next step is for us to make a field trip to Marenakos Rock Center in Issaquah to select the rock and have them machine it to receive the plaque. The rock will then be placed in Seahurst Park this Summer near the beginning of the north pathway that overlooks the restored beach Joan was so instrumental in making a reality. We are planning an unveiling ceremony for the memorial plaque/rock early this Fall in conjunction with an Environmental Science Center "beach day" so stay tuned!! The JMM Committee.

We have big news!! The design of the plaque has been finalized and is being crafted by Fraser Bronze Foundry. It will take 3 to 4 weeks to complete, following which will be the selection and machining of the rock to attach the plaque. Thanks again to all of you that have helped us make this memorial to Joan a reality! JMMC
