Heaven gained another bright star with the passing of Jim Carrol Ross. He passed away on January 8, 2018 at his home in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico at the age 72.

In the early 1970s, Jim worked in construction and had a hand in building the massive greenhouses for the nurseries that supplied the grape cuttings for the large wine grape vineyards of Sonoma and Napa Counties.

He also worked many years as tree trimmer in Vista, California. He built two homes for his family in the Mountains of Mendocino County  in Northern California. He was an expert marksman and game hunter. He loved life in the wilderness and enjoyed being close the earth and nature.

Jim was a self-taught history scholar and studied by reading many books on the subject of Old-West and Native American history. His mother’s side of the family was of the Cherokee Nation.

Jim had a knack for picking up languages and spoke fluent Spanish and French and some German.  

Jim had a natural musical gift with his ability to pick up and play many different stringed interments. His most significant talent was in playing the guitar. He also wrote and sang his own songs.

He was charming, was charismatic and his sense of humor was a most treasured by his family.  He was considered an old fashioned gentleman and many of the friends spoke highly of his kind and gentile nature.


Jim was preceded in death by his parents, father, Willard Ross and his mother Orilla James Ross. Willard worked as a cowboy at the Ladder Ranch in the late 1940s. Orilla was a long time resident of T or C.


Charlie Ross, Willard’s uncle owned Pelican Silver mine in Hillsboro, New Mexico in 1919.

Jim was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his son James Ross Waters, wholives in, California, two daughters Jennifer Rebecca Ross and Sarah Mae Ross and two Grandchildren, Achaius and Calia who live in New Mexico; sister and brother-in-law Anita and John Chavez; sister Liz Williams, Shelly Kuntz, Teresa Almond, Dale and Lenora Burkdoll and many nieces and nephews and loving friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Old School House, Woods Road,  Caballo, New Mexico, March 3, 2018, 1:00  p.m.  A service will follow at the gravesite at Palomas Cemetery, in Palomas, New Mexico.

The cost of the funeral, burial and head stone is very costly and no money was left to help.  Jennifer Ross has been using credit cards to pay most of the expenses. She will be collecting funds.
