Jezebel : a true story

$20,063 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 179 people in 9 months

My name is Numa Perrier. I'm an artist and filmmaker living  and working in Los Angeles.  I'm raising finishing funds to get me through post production on my first feature film.

This is my story.

When I was 19 years old, I had to crash with my sister, my brother, my sisters boyfriend, and her 3 year old son, in a tiny studio (furnished weekly rental) apartment in Las Vegas, NV.  Our Mom was in the last days of her life due to diabetic complications.  When she died we all went scrambling.  What would we do next? And more urgently - how would we get next weeks rent paid?

My sister, who was a phone sex operator at the time, suggested I try "internet modeling" at a fetish site.  This was the very early days of the internet (remember dial up?) which completely caused a surge in the adult industry -  much similar to the tech boom that came a few years later.

I was hired as their only black girl and I actually liked working there a lot. I learned a great deal about myself, men, and my sexuality. I also connected with people who were just lonely like me and looking for someone to talk to.

One of them is a special person  who is still part of my life today.  Yes, 15+ years later.

This somewhat bizarre sexual coming of age story  is what the film Jezebel is all about.

This is my first feature. We filmed 5 days in Las Vegas and another 4 in Los Angeles.

Making a feature is a FEAT.

I've had to juggle money.  I've had to borrow money.  Some loans are long, some are short.   I have cast and crew to pay and post production to get through- editing, music, etc,  as we are on the fast track to film festival deadlines.

Many of you have asked how you can get involved.

Come with me.  Join me.  Fund me.

See you at the movies

Much love

Hey Everyone -

Here with a piece of good news!

I'm happy to announce that Tribeca Film Institute has selected Jezebel for the first ever Work In Progress program at this years festival. Tribeca has been an early supporter of my work and the script when it was just at 15 pages. This program is for projects in post production to secure finishing funds and/or early distribution. It includes 3 days of networking followed by a screening on the 4th day. Jezebel is one of only 3 narrative films selected for this screening and I'll be showing 20 minutes of the film to industry executives only.

Our executive producer- Livia Perrier, and our producer Winter Dunn will be joining me.

I believe this program will mark an exciting turning point for Jezebel and I expect to come back to you all with even more good news soon.

Here's the press link for more details and as always you can let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Everyone-

These last few months have not been easy.

In October I screened a rough cut of the film to a small audience in LA. This was for feedback. Does the film land? Will it make its mark on peoples emotions and pull them into this bizarre world that I experienced?
Yes. It did.
Jezebel in its rough form was well received.
Some of you were present.

I'm very proud of this film. It's everything I want it to be - raw and authentic and sensual and singular. I was on a high after this screening and all of the rich feedback.

Then I hit a lull. Suddenly plans I had for further finishing funds didn't pan out. Got some rejections from producers, festivals and other programs. Eeeek. I know rejection is part of the submission process - but damn some of those were tough blows to deal with. Everywhere I am applying will bring opportunities to the film - so the disappointment had me feeling unsteady. How will I finish? How will I find and deliver this film to its audience?

I don't want to disappoint my cast, crew and supporters. I don't want to disappoint myself. We have come so far.

Then I remembered how I got this film off the ground in the first place. It has been with my team behind and in front of the camera bringing all of our talent and enthusiasm to the table and not waiting for any approvals at all!

It has been with you all chipping in - flowing encouragement and funding my way. Introducing me and the film to people who can help. You all believe in me as an artist and together this is moving forward.

The funding that was raised so far was used to pay our editor and other crew, and to cover the films insurance which was pretty pricey with an out of state shoot.

We still have sound design, sound mix, and coloring to make the film a final polished piece ready to be seen! We also have a few crew members to pay who have been very patient.

So, if any of you can add any amount to your contribution, I'm asking that you please do so now.

This will get the wheel moving again.

I appreciate how generous you have all been and how swift you all moved to join me this far.

I'll be in touch soon with more updates.

Much love

We are still pretty deep in post production. I'm happy with the most recent cut because I can really see the shape of the film now. Was feeling around in the dark before. Still have a ways to go, but we are about 80 percent there. I remember how much I used to love photography because I'm so impatient. crafting a film takes time and recesses and an entire team. Stay tuned though. I'll back with more updates soon.

This holiday weekend we had a four hour post production meeting / viewing session at house of numa aka my apartment in downtown la. The cut is coming together. There's still missing elements including voice over and music that's being worked on this week. The current cut is under 2 hours and we will get rid of at least another 30 minutes. A friend asked me is it painful to cut scenes and I said no it's a relief. I'm not a fan of excess in my art it's a lane where I prefer to be economical and exercise restraint. Our team understands that and is making sure we stay on that path. Still more work to be done but we are closer. I also
Showed my sister (our Executive Producer and the woman I play in the movie ) one scene - she gave me her thumbs up on how I'm portraying her - - so that alone is getting me through the doubts that do creep
Up while you're creating.

Thank you everyone and stay tuned :)

And follow us on Instagram @jezebelmovie to keep up with more frequent updates and visuals.
