JESUS GUILLÉN |  Winemaker

Why are we seeking funds?

A devastating, aggressive cancer has taken the life of Oregon's beloved Latino Winemaker at only 37 years of age. His family needs relief from mounting medical bills and to insure a promising future for his ten year old son Adrian.

Who was Jesus Guillen?

Jesus was the only Latino Award Winning Head Winemaker in the entire state of Oregon. He was Head Winemaker for White Rose Estate,  a major wine label where he received many awards for the vintages he helped produce. He had even started bottling his own wine harvested from some under-ripe and undernourished vines that were being thrown out by Vista Hills Vineyard because of a vole infestation.  The young 37 year old oenophile persevered in spite of a lack of encouragement from wine elites but the wine shockingly turned out to be not only "not too bad", as a matter of fact, it was very good. He named it appropriately "Survivor" and  bottled it under his own label, Guillen Family Wines.

How did Jesus become a winemaker?

A native of Chihyahua, Mexico he came to the U.S. to stay long enough to learn English and visit his father who worked at White Rose Estate. Once here, he was infatuated with winemaking and realized he had the palate, the ambition, intelligence and hard work ethic to become an excellent winemaker. And so he did.  In 2009 he produced a vintage that earned one of the highest scores ever given to an Oregon pinot noir by the Wine Advocate and he followed that up in 2010 with two more first and second place vintages on Portland Monthly's list of "Oregon's 50 Best Wines."

What does the future hold for Jesus' Family?

Jesus' Angels team intends to do all they can to support this extraordinary man's family. We hope that you will join us and the entire Oregon wine community in this worthy endeavor.

For Jesus Guillen the art of great winemaking was a family affair. Everyone participated to nurture the legacy that Jesus dreamed of creating. The outpouring of support from friends and admirers for the Guillen Family after the sudden loss of Jesus has been overwhelming and heart-warming. The Guillen family wants to express their deepest appreciation to everyone who has supported them with their donations and kind sentiments during this very difficult time for them. Donors comments about Jesus will be cherished always and were a comforting reminder to them of how loved and respected Jesus was by the entire community. There are simply not enough words to fully express our heartfelt thanks.
To honor Jesus' legacy the family has agreed to release the last remaining vintages that Jesus personally created for Guillen Family Wines. It is their way to say thank you to everyone by sharing a piece of his legacy in the wine industry. If you would like to have a memorial bottle, you can do this by going to https://guillenfamily.com to select from their existing inventory. If you prefer, you can also visit The Tasting Room at the Dundee Hills Wine Library, 20420 NE Sunnycrest Rd., Newberg, OR 97132 to purchase his wine.
Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for all that you are doing for our family.

As organizer of the GoFundMe campaign for Jesus' Guillen's family I felt the need to address the donors to our campaign in light of the recent news coverage of the scam artists who stole a great deal of money by posting a made up story for their own illicit gains. Happily, they are all under arrest, awaiting sentencing and GoGundMe is returning all the donations made to their campaign. An important point when considering the integrity of a crowd-funding platform.
Since many donors don't know who I am, let me tell you how I came to know Jesus. My name is Barbara Sanders. I am the mother of the owner of White Rose Estate where Jesus was the head winemaker. When we first leaned of Jesus' grave diagnosis we decided to launch this campaign to support his family with the extraordinary medical expenses they were about to incur. By the time we had it ready to post Jesus had passed away and the family was now looking at funeral costs as well. We put together our team, "Jesus'Angels" and went to work determined to help his family through this horribly difficult time. Jesus was so loved and respected in the wine community that the response on GoFundMe has been humbling. Each day I sent on the average of 50 thank you's to donors and wept reading the beautiful tributes to this incredible man.
I would like to add here a word about GoFundMe. As a crowd-funding platform in times of great need I cannot say enough good things about them. I had never done a campaign before and needed a lot of help setting it up. They were available to me via e-mail 24/7 and I often emailed them at 2 in the morning with questions. Their quick responses and professionalism were remarkable. I could not have done it without their help.
I want to assure all the donors that this campaign is not a scam. All funds raised will go directly to Jesus' wife to defray hospital and funeral expenses. A small percentage is paid to GoFundMe which covers their operating costs which I can assure you pays the salaries of all those wonderful assistants who put up with me @ 2 in the morning. They earned it with me.
I hope this allays any concerns donors to this campaign might have had as to the veracity of this campaign. Anyone with questions can leave me a message and I will answer them personally. Jesus' family and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your amazing generosity.
