“Mr. P...Coach P...Mr. Jerry the tutor...” Jerry Paradiso is known by countless students, colleagues, and the families of those whose lives he has touched by a lot of different names, all of them spoken with great affection, respect, and a smile at the knowing of his smarts, kindness, and humor. For 35 years, his dedication to children has been steadfast and sure, always going above and beyond to work with students and their families to foster learning and growth.
What most people have not known is that Jerry was diagnosed with the rare “Tall Cell Variant” Papillary Thyroid Cancer in 2010. Though his cancer was in stage IV and is incurable, Jerry was very lucky to have been able to live a mostly normal life. The combination of his practical and positive spirit, along with his brilliant medical providers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), have enabled him to be at his best as a teacher, tutor, husband to Tracey, and father to Silvana and Anthony.
Recently, his cancer took a challenging turn, and now a second, new cancer that is very aggressive is also being addressed by his MSKCC team. In order to devote all of his energies to making the most of the targeted chemotherapies that are available to him, Jerry made the difficult decision to retire from the career he loves so much.
Jerry has been cared for by his wife, who has been caregiving for family members more often than not for almost as long as Jerry and Tracey have been married. What has always felt right to them is being in service to others, whether students, small and non-profit businesses, or people who are in crisis and need a hand; they have a way of meeting people where they're at for their educational, health care, communications, and unique human needs. This is what has been most satisfying for them, but it has not built them a savings to fall back upon in times like these.
Tracey's much needed freelance earnings have been at a standstill while she's been tending to Jerry. Meanwhile, multiple new expenses associated with Jerry's care have added to their ordinary costs of living. Your consideration is greatly appreciated by their family.
