My name is Lisa Castro and I am a family friend. My intention is to raise money to support a kind, loving family who is in the midst of losing their husband, father & sole provider.

Last Wednesday (Sept. 14, 2016), Jens (pronounced Yenz) & his son were working on a project in the garage when Jens began to have chest pains. Their son suggested they go inside for a moment. Soon after, Jens suffered a massive heart attack. His 15 year old son called 911 and administered CPR until the ambulance arrived. Jens immediately underwent heart surgery, which went well. However, his temperature rose and doctors induced coma. On Sunday, when Jens was brought out of the induced coma, we were told he suffered severe brain damage and would never be able to speak, walk or remember any of his family members. He will be removed from life support within the next two days.

Jens wife Kathrin shared: "U2 is my support, my religion. Their music helps me to heal, fight and love. I had yesterday happy tears when I got told that they'll let me listen to my music when they are going to turn of the machines. This is, for me personally, the perfect way to say good bye. I will put my playlist together. I can listen to songs that are very dear to me and many of them Jens liked to."

Medical expenses have exceeded $100,000 and the family does not have insurance. The money recieved will be used to pay these medical expenses.

Jens was a hardworking man dedicating his life to providing for his family and making many sacrifices to do so. He recently began to take some time off of work and had been teaching his son how to rebuild and restore a 1967 Chevy C-10 truck that was to be his son's when he turned 16 this summer.

This family is extremely service-oriented, kind, generous and caring. Jens' wife regularly volunteers to cut hair for the homeless in our community. She has also lovingly cared for an aging gentleman in our community up until his recent death. Jens' teenage son volunteers for prom night as a "prom date" for special needs teenage girls. And Jens' daughter was in the midst of planning her wedding when this accident suddenly occured.

I am sincerely grateful for any amount you can contribute, and your prayers are equally appreciated.

It is the time of the year were I start writing my Christmas cards. Yes, I still do this tradition. ;-)
I send every year around 25 to 30 cards to Germany and I do love if I find Christmas cards in my mail box too, since I use the cards every year to decorate one of my walls in the living room. I do have still friends, coworkers old neighbors etc. who I only hear from once a year, but this is ok. They know I still think about them and they about me. Every year I hand write each card and write about the highlights of our year and what is new.
I can't do that this year. The memories are just to hurtful to relive this over 20 times. So I wrote this morning a letter about everything what happened, including the passing of Ellis in July (the old men I cared for) Jens passing, Mandys wedding and how we are doing now.
It was so hard to to write this, but now I got it saved and all I got to do is print it out and stick it in the Christmas mails for the people who don't know yet what happened. We will have a very hard Christmas, but I also believe that it brings us even closer as a family, as it did the last several month. I'm very proud how far we come so far and how we handle everything. Even if we struggle, and I don't know yet about the presents I can put under the tree yet, since money is very tight, but we will be ok and we will start the new year ready for more change that is coming toward us.
2016 was the hardest year that I ever experienced, I know 2017 will be a good one for us!
Lots of Love, Kathrin

Yesterday we made our last payment to the funeral home. The costs included the cremation, newspaper obituary and a excellent service helping us to transfer Jens ashes in different things to spread it out over the family. One part of his ashes is already in Germany, the small metal tin with the american flag will go eventual to Germany when Ben is going next time, to be buried or spread close to the lake Jens loved so much and spend lots of his childhood. There are also 2 necklaces (one for Ben one for me), there is the beautiful silver/blue metal urn with the tea candle on top that is now sitting on my dresser next to Jens picture. Now I am able to light a candle always in a very special way for him. The brown wooden box is for Mandy and the small metal tin that I will bury in the yard in bubbas grave, our first dog we had here in America and Jens missed so much. It is hard to see, but it has a Supermen symbol on it and I wish I wish the tin would have been a bit bigger. Jens loved Supermen and he used to tell Ben always that he used to be Supermen, but lost his power when he came over from Germany and got scanned when he walked thru the control. :-D
To my surprise, all those containers and things and there is still a lot of ash left and I will get now a bigger urn and place it in Jens desk area, that he decorated with lots of old pictures from his childhood, his grandfather/grandmother, sister and brother and his mother. I will keep just the way Jens liked it.
So the first huge burden got paid out of the gofund account and I want to say thank you very much who helped us already. As promised I will keep things updated and let you know where your money is going. Hospital bills are coming in and so are many others. We decided to wait with the hospital bills, until every single bill is here. We got so far about 6 and it adds up so far to around $2500, but these are all "small" bills. The big one will be the one from the ICU where Jens was laying in for a week.
We are doing otherwise ok and try to get our new life started with out Jens with us (in person, he will be always with us somehow!)
Thanks again for your help!
Love Kathrin

Thank you Lisa so much for starting this fundraiser for my kids and me! I'm overwhelmed by the support and love we're receiving from all around us!
I promise that your donations will NOT be wasted, but only invested in the medical fund or bills that will come up. I will keep you updated how much I will take out and for what it will be used for.
I also wanted to share Jens last picture Itook from him. This is him and our Wolfy who is now 9 years old and Jens wanted a memory picture with him. He looks so happy and now it is my memory picture of Jens and one day from Wolfy too. <3
