Jean Jantzen's Unexpected Debt

Donation protected
Jean Jantzen, a widow in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, is facing a debt of $3,857, the balance of an $8,200 loan her husband  left behind when he died in the Fall of 2014.   Mrs. Jantzen knew nothing about this loan.

When she tried to close her late husband's credit union account, it was disallowed because of the outstanding loan, and she found out that he had used their 2002 Chevrolet as collateral.  This car is Jean's only means of transportation, so of course she doesn't want it to be repossessed.

The Credit Union staff suggested she could re-mortgage her home or work out different terms for repaying the loan.  After paying monthly costs, Jean has under $100 left over for groceries.

Jean's late husband had subsisted on long-term disability, he hadn't worked for the last 35 years, and his total assets were listed at under $41,000 when the loan was granted.  Mrs. Jantzen suspects the loan could have been taken out to support her husband's gambling problem, an issue she believes resulted from a traumatic childhood in Europe during the Second World War.  Mrs. Jantzen believes that her husband had post-traumatic stress disorder.

The last thing Mrs. Jantzen heard about the debt was a letter she received from a collection agent, asking that the account be settled.  She said the Credit Union plans to pursue the matter legally, although notices from the Courts are yet to arrive.  They may even want to put a lien against the Estate.

Please help Jean Jantzen with this debt - a debt she didn't incur, and didn't know existed - so she can pay off the Credit Union.

Thank you.

And thank you to Eric Plummer, reporter for the Alberni Valley Times.
