JDRF - Help end Type 1 Diabetes

Join me in turning Type One into Type None!

How did I get here? You can blame my wife.

Nearly everyone who gets involved with the JDRF community has a story of why they’re here. What’s their connection? What drives them to commit themselves to this particular cause. Who, in particular, are they trying to help?

For me, it’s my wife, Mary.

No, she’s not the one that suffers from Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), but rather members of her family that deal with this disease every day.

A few years ago, her cousin Rose who had been a very active parent and participant in many JDRF rides had been dealt an extremely devastating diagnosis. She did not have much time left at that point, and she and Mary were chatting often on the phone long distance.

With the advance of her brain tumor, Rose had likely ridden her last JDRF ride and was concerned that all her efforts to help end T1D would soon end.

As Mary hung up the phone that night, she asked me, “Do you think I could ride a bike 100 miles for JDRF – and for Rose?”

I said, “How much time have we got to train?” And just like that, I was in.

I'm Leighton. I’ve been a life-long cyclist, but I never much thought about what my abilities on a bicycle could do to help others – especially people living with T1D. And until now, I’ve never felt so powerful.

So, I’m taking part in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes because I know that my fundraising efforts will help improve the lives of millions of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

A little bit about T1D:

-Is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin – a hormone essential to turning food into energy.

-Strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle.

-Requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

-With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure – yet. But JDRF is working every day to change that.

Every dollar you donate to my Ride today will help JDRF continue to fund critical research that impacts the lives of millions of children, adults, and families affected by T1D.

This year, my wife and I will be riding the JDRF Death Valley event on October 15, 2016. It will be a tough day, but so is a day with T1D.

All funds collected for this campaign will be directly donated to JDRF. You may also check my personal donation page on the JDRF website, here.

With your support, we will create a world without T1D and turn Type One into Type None. Thank you.
