There are some incredible GoFundMe stories out there: folks who need money for medical bills, little kids doing amazing things for their communities, families hoping to reunite... it's an incredibly emotional site. I can't and won't say that my story is nearly as compelling as some of the other folks', but if I find the funding to help get me to my study abroad destination, the Dominican Republic, the resources that I'll be able to offer folks in need will grow immeasurably. The education and experience I hope to receive from this program will contribute to the health, happiness and well-being of every person I might be lucky enough to work with as my empathy and knowledge continue to grow.
For the past couple of years, I've dedicated much of my time to studying sociology, psychology, trauma-informed care and holistic approaches to attaining a healthy mind. A large part of my studies have been centered around cultural competency and cultivating the skills necessary to communicate with as many different kinds of people as I can. I began studying Spanish before I understood the importance of intercultural communication, and as I continue to study the language, the importance of solidarity and expressing warmth towards others becomes more and more imperative.
A faculty-led trip to the Dominican Republic will not only allow me to experience life with a native, host family, but will also give me the opportunity to work with young ones in local schools in a safe and welcoming environment, all the while forcing me to communicate on others' terms. I'm also hoping to be allowed the opportunity to offer free haircuts and holisitic skincare knowledge to anyone who may need it. To be confirmed soon, hopefully!
Please, don't think twice if this is out of your reach for any reason at all. I understand that asking for help in this way can be perceived as annoying. I will graciously accept anything anyone offers, especially advice, and will be over the dang moon with joy and gratitude should anyone choose to help this sister out. And if not, don't forget about the little ones and injured animals out there. I already have a voice.
