Dear Family and Friends,
I have started this gofundme page on behalf of my brother, Glenn Waller and his wife Laura.
On May 3rd, 2017, a parent's worst nightmare began and our family received the most devastating news. After bumping his head from a fall, my 11 month old nephew Jaxon began exhibiting symptoms of a concussion and was taken to the ER by my sister-in-law and father. After being cleared, Jaxon continued to exhibit symptoms and was brought to his pediatrician, where a CT scan revealed a 3cm brain tumor on Jaxon's cerebellum. He was then taken to Maria Ferari Children's Hospital in Westchester, where he underwent emergency brain surgery on Friday, May 5th, to remove the tumor.
After 7 long hours, pediatric neurosurgeons were able to remove most of the tumor, but due to Jaxon's age and anatomy, a small piece was left behind. Preliminary tests showed and this week confirmed that his tumor is ependymoma- a rare cancer that is diagnosed in less than 200 children a year. Jaxon's course of treatment which may include another surgery, possibily chemotherapy and radiation, will be decided once genetic testing gives doctors an idea of how aggresive his tumor is. He may have to receive treatment at St. Jude's in Memphis, TN, due to how young he is.
Jaxon is doing well and showing good signs after slowly coming out of sedation this past week. His family has not left his side.
With all of this unfortunate news and the emotional toll- comes a financial burden that no family should have to worry about while caring for their child. Despite having insurance, this has put a huge financial strain on Glenn and Laura- because not everything (including his surgery) is covered by their insurance. They are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Westchester. Glenn has used all of his vacation days and returned to work this week, while Laura has been unable to work as she stays by Jaxon's side day and night.
