January 8, 2011 is a tragic, unforgettable day in the history of our community, our state and our nation. The senseless loss of six lives, the wounding of 13 at a "Congress on Your Corner" event marks that day as one of the most tragic in recent memory. In the days that followed, our community came together to provide comfort and support to one another. That heartfelt community response was the driving force behind creating a permanent memorial.
Why is Tucson’s January 8th Memorial important?
It will...
• Be a place where we honor those that gave their lives in pursuit of a better democracy and is designed to communicate togetherness, solidarity, and empathy.
• Tell the story of what happened on January 8, 2011 and will educate people on the only attack of a member of Congress while meeting with constituents, the first loss in history of a Congressional Staff Member in the line of duty, the loss of a Federal Judge and remind people of their critical role in self-governance.
