Our niece and cousin Jami Rae Stribley was recently diagnosed with a life-threatening illness called HLH, which stands for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. This illness causes the immune system to become overstimulated and it begins to damage the patient’s own tissues and organs, including the bone marrow, the liver and the brain.

Jami just turned 14 in September. A few weeks later she came down with what was thought to be a cold. Days later, she started running a high temperature. Doctors, at the time, thought it was a virus. After several days though, she developed a rash and her skin started looking yellow. At this point, she was rushed to the hospital in Iowa City and placed in the children’s ICU. After some tests, doctors told the family that Jami’s liver had shut down and some of her other organs were also being damaged. The doctors suspected she had something called HLH and put her on medication right away in an attempt to save her. Thankfully, due to so many prayers, as well as the team of doctors quick actions, she started to do better and her liver started functioning again. After spending about a week in the children’s ICU, Jami is beginning to show a bit of improvement. While the doctors have said her recovery has been “remarkable”, she will still need to be hospitalized for several more weeks and then require home health nursing and also daily injections of a drug called Anakinra which cost $500 per injection. The doctors have told her parents that “this isn’t a race - it’s a marathon.”

Jami’s parents, Jeff and Karie, have accrued a large amount of medical expenses and both parents had to miss a lot of work without pay. Since Jami has been out of the children’s ICU, her father Jeff has been traveling back and forth to Waterloo, IA so he doesn’t miss out on additional work, but her mother Karie is still with Jami in Iowa City. We’re hoping to be able to raise some funds to help them out with some of the financial burdens and perscription cost that they have incurred, so they can concentrate on Jami and getting her well again. Please keep the family in your prayers too. Thank you.
