Jake's Medical Fund

Hello, and thank you for visiting Jake's page.

My name is Robin Ertas, and I am a foster mom with Maltese & More Rescue in San Diego, CA.

A few weeks ago, our rescue was contacted by Gaines Shelter, and we were asked if we could help find a home for an adorable little dog that had been rescued out of a neglectful and abusive home. The survivor, Jake, was a dirty and matted little boy who was extremely emaciated at 4 lbs.

We gladly took him from the shelter and had one of our fosters, Carol Rubin, welcome him into her home, where he started to open up and trust people. He gained weight, began playing instead of hiding, and finally learned how good it felt to be a part of the family.

We were contacted on Facebook by a potential adopter who took an interest in him, and asked to meet him. Our rescue founder, Dawn Lierman, took him out to meet the woman, and things started out well.

The potential adoptee asked to hold Jake, and began playing with him on her lap. When Jake took an interest in her long and freshly done nails, the woman yelled "Don't you ruin my new nails" and pushed Jake off. He hit the ground, both front legs went under him, and his head hit the concrete.

Dawn  quickly called San Diego Bay Animal Hospital and brought Jake in. He needed orthopedic surgery with plates and pins. Jake has been in the hospital since 1/15.

After going to the hospital with Dawn, and hearing the surgery needed for Jake, the woman who dropped him said she was no longer interested, and has not contacted us since. We have not been able to reach her.

We won't give up on Jake. He has been through so much, and hit this roadbump just as he was on the brink of a better life. His surgery is going to cost $3,500 in total, and we are pleading for your help. This little boy came from a horrible circumstance, but with his foster mom, Carol, he found love for people again.

He learned to love, to trust, to play, and he began to reach a healthy weight.  Please help us give this dog a better life. He is the sweetest most forgiving creature, and he deserves a good life.
