Jake Hesselman is a 22 year old fifth year student in college at the University of Dubuque.
Being born without arms or legs, Jake has overcome great obstacles throughout his 22 years. He has already accomplished more than most will throughout their lifetime. He is not one to sit idly and let life pass
by, active in many school functions, sporting teams, and has always been a friendly face living on campus. With his schooling nearing an end, Jake will soon be entering his student teaching position and the workforce. This GoFundMe page will allow him to do that.
Jake recently completed driver's education and earned his Iowa driver's license. He completed his course and was trained to drive with a specially modified van. Jake will require one of these vans to drive.
This fund is to help him acquire a van and have it modified for him. A typical new van would cost in the neighborhood of $30,000, Jake's van will top over the $100,000 dollar mark after being outfitted
with a handicap accessible ramp and joy stick controls. His family and friends would like to ease this burden as much as possible and help Jake continue on with his independent
life.
A little more info on how Jake's driving is accomplished for those who are curious, Jake's van will be a handicap upfitted van that you would typically see with a side entry ramp for his wheelchair. Then it will be taken a step further and modified for his ability to drive, the
front seats will be made removable and locks for his wheel chair would be installed in the driver and passenger positions. The Van will then be
equipped with a joy stick control that operates the vehicle similarly to his wheel chair (Jake has essentially
been practicing to drive for 20 years). That is the setup Jake used for his driver's education and it worked well for him, passing that and the DMV driving test without
issue.
