Hi Everyone—

Our favorite Earth Angel (or Alien?), Jael Strauss, needs our help. Jael, one of the most compassionate, generous, and kind-hearted beings in the universe, has been dealt a tough hand. Those of us who know her understand that she is a fighter, but this fight will be a long, rocky, and definitely expensive one.

At the end of September, Jael became very sick and was diagnosed with aggressive Stage IV Rapidly Progressive Metastatic Inflammatory Breast Cancer. It has metastasized and spread beyond the breast tissue. She has just begun chemo, but we do not know how things will play out. What we do know is that Jael is putting all of her energy and drive into fighting this insidious disease and can use as much support and love as possible.

Jael, being the selfless person that she is, has helped countless people throughout her life as an advocate for recovery and social justice. She has offered everything she has to people in need; no matter what their situation, she is always ready to help with an empathetic heart and nonjudgmental spirit. She has created “gofundmes” for literally dozens of her friends, and it is now time for us to pay her back. We have the chance, and honestly the obligation, to step up and return the favor.

Please help Jael through this battle with cancer. Whether you can give a lot, a little, or contribute by keeping her in your hearts, anything helps. Jael is in tremendous pain right now and is unable to work. In a month, she will be let go from her job and lose her health insurance. I’m sure everyone understands how expensive cancer treatment is, and the last thing we want Jael to focus on right now is whether or not she will be able to afford her rent, her treatment, and other expenses.

We will update this page as time passes and we receive more news. In the meantime, please spread the word and spread the love. Give what you can, send messages of support— whatever you’ve got.

This gofundme has been set up by friends of Jael’s, but the money raised is going directly into Jael’s bank account. She is so grateful to everyone for their generous donations.

Hello Friends and family,
Today we lost our earth angel and she is back in the spirit world from which she came and we know she will be watching over all of us . She will dance at how we celebrate her life by spreading the love that she lived by daily with a reckless abandon. We can honor her best by trying to #lovelikejael . In lieu of flowers , the family is requesting donations for funeral arrangements and extraordinary final medical expenses. All donations will go solely to these expenses. At the very least , please simply share this post and ask others to do the same so we can get it across the world.Thank you so much for all the love, support, & prayers through the journey

Hello friends - a rather large update here..

Today Jael found out that her insurance has dropped her coverage due to her inability to attend work. We are still awaiting the COBRA paperwork in order to retain her insurance, which after it is completed, will still take several weeks to take effect. Jael is now facing out of pocket expenses for some necessary medical costs - most importantly, her prescription medication. One of her prescriptions alone costs around $1000, and she is on a large number of prescription medication in addition to this. We are asking for anyone who is willing to share this campaign to please do so.

Over the last two weeks, Jael managed to be discharged from the hospital to come home and continue outpatient chemotherapy. She was home for several days, but was experiencing a great deal of pain and discomfort due to her abdomen continuing to gradually become extremely distended and firm. This eventually brought her back to the emergency room, and she was admitted to the hospital again. She has been in the hospital for the last week, and during this time she had a procedure to drain the fluid out of her abdomen, and about 4.5 liters of fluid was drained. Since then, her abdomen is slowly becoming distended again, and there is the possibility of draining it again and/or placing a drain in order to be able to drain it more easily. The chemotherapy has been brutal for her, and it has taken its toll on her. Due to the overwhelming sickness associated with the chemo, she has made the decision to stop chemotherapy at this time. She is pursuing other forms of treatment, including but not limited to the possibility of a different type of chemotherapy which may have fewer side effects. A CT scan has revealed that the tumors in her breast and abdomen have become smaller, while the tumors around her ovaries have become larger.

Jael will hopefully be discharged from the hospital again over the weekend and be able to come home and continue outpatient treatments. Her oncology team can continue to explore all possible options to treat her cancer while still providing her with a good quality of life so that she might enjoy her time with her friends and family. However, due to the recent developments with her insurance coverage, we are asking for help to cover the costs of her medications. Any contributions, shares, or prayers are most sincerely appreciated. Thank you for all of your generosity and support thus far, it has been the most amazing blessing indeed.

Lots of Love,

Cody & Jael

I am absolutely astounded at the outpouring of support we have received in such a short amount of time. Because of so many of you contributing, sharing and praying, we were able to meet this goal quickly. This goal was a modest one when considering the anticipated costs of treatment, care costs, and costs of living associated with the nature of Jael’s diagnosis. Because of this, we have increased our goal. We are so very thankful to have met this goal and have some of the initial financial stresses lifted. We couldn’t have done this without you. You made this possible.

So much love and endless gratitude,
Cody

I am so blown away by all of this support. So grateful, especially for the little things like being able to get out of bed by myself, go to the restroom by myself. My swelling has been going down- my feet are smaller and don’t look like footballs anymore. Things have been steadily improving since the last update. I feel better, but no where near how it used to be. I’m not out of the woods yet.
Good news is I will be discharging from the hospital soon to begin outpatient treatment.
I’m keeping a great attitude, and I could not do it without all of the love and support I’ve received from everyone.
I want to especially thank the incredible hospital staff at Seton, the doctors, nurses, and specialists have been so kind, helpful, and generous with their care.

Again, I am so grateful for all the love and support. I am working on getting comfortable walking again, honestly just being able to breathe and walk at the same time, and I’m fighting to regain my physical strength.
