2nd Year Sport and bExercise Science from the University of Limerick are organising the annual Jacinta O'Brien Plassey 10k on the 9th April 2017.

Jacinta, who was a member of the Physical Education and Sport Sciences teaching Department in the University of Limerick, was an inspiration to sport and recreation, especially to those in UL. She touched many people lives and encouraged her students and coworkers to live more active lives. She was involved in many activities and sport but did great work for the disabled in sport. Unfortunately, she passed away suddenly in her mid-forties.

This year is the 13th anniversary of Jacinta's passing and as such we are hoping that you could help us to make the event bigger and better than ever! We are here to celebrate and continue her legacy!

The 2017 funds raised will go to two worthy charities selected by our student group – “The Irish Cancer Society” and “The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association”.

Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA):
IMNDA is the only organisation of its kind in the country. They are dedicated to working on behalf of people living with MND and their families and carers. Their key services include home visits by their 3 MND nurses, financial assistance towards home help and the supply of specialised equipment on loan. They also fund and promote research into the causes and treatments of MND.
• Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neurological condition that attacks motor neurons or nerves in the brain and spinal cord.
• It effects the way you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.
• There is no cure for this disease and the IMNDA supports people looking for a cure as well as the people suffering from the disease and their families.
• It relies on fundraising for 80% of their funds.

Irish Cancer Society:
• Cancer has in some way touched everyone, be it friend, family member or partner, everyday it causes more misery and death.
• Why not help the Irish Cancer Society’s work?
• The funding they receive isn’t just for research, they work they do in helping those fighting cancer is truly amazing as the list below lists just some of the great work they do;
 Daffodil centres in many hospitals in Ireland
 Provide financial support to patients
 Provide help with transportation to and from treatment
 Provide a free nursing service to cancer patients in their homes and put cancer patients in touch with cancer survivors in their peer support programme – https://www.cancer.ie/about-us/how-we-have-helped
 They have invested over 30 million in cancer research to date.

Thank you :)
