We are a group of alums, students, and friends of Ursuline Academy of Cincinnati. Ursuline taught many of us about the importance of sisterhood, and of courageously giving voice to our values.
We are troubled by recent news that the school administration has censored LGBTQ+ content from the school newspaper, among other events that suggest a lack of adequate support for LGBTQ+ students. Over 1,000 of us have signed an alumni petition asking the school administration to reconsider its actions and policies. Many of us have also written individual letters and reached out in support to current students.
We are heartbroken and disappointed by recent events, but also confident in the strength of the Ursuline community. As an additional showing of support to LGBTQ+ youth in and out of Ursuline, we have started this fundraiser for It Gets Better, a 501c3 organization that supports LGBTQ+ youth around the globe. For those who are unfamiliar, “It Gets Better Project envisions a world where all LGBTQ+ youth are free to live equally and know their worthiness and power as individuals.” It Gets Better facilitates inspiring media content, access to community-based service providers, and more for LGBTQ+ youth.
We cannot think of a better message to send to current Ursuline students than this: it gets better, and there is a world of support out there for you. Please consider donating and sharing this link - all funds will be directly donated to It Gets Better.
