In Canada, approximately 1.3 million children are food insecure, equating to 1 out of every 5 children. These are children in your neighbourhood, that go to your local schools and are friends with your sons and daughters.
While many students are supported by school lunch programs, Isthmus is one of the only programs in the country to provide students with reliable access to food that bridges the food security gap they experience over the weekends.
With your help, we take care of the urgent need of Canadian children to be fed so that they can learn and grow. This year, we ask that you help support a child in your local community by donating to Isthmus, while you’re doing your shopping this holiday season. It costs just $120 to feed a child for the entire school year.
How it works
- Students are selected to receive food donations based upon recommendations by teachers most familiar with their specific family context.
- Fresh food is delivered to the schools Friday morning via wholesale distribution channels.
- Volunteers divide up the food into discrete, unmarked reusable bags.
- Teachers and volunteers discreetly deliver bags of food to students each week to take home over the weekend.
- Often the volunteer coordinators also provide recipes, meal suggestions or even cooking classes to support the students.
- Students and their families prepare meals with the food.
- Students return the empty bags every Monday morning to be refilled for the following week.
- Our Volunteer Coordinators make long-term commitments to the program and build trusted long-term relationships with the children who benefit from our programs.
$120 feeds a child for the entire school year.
About Isthmus
Isthmus is the only national charity to provide food on the weekends for Canadian children living in poverty.
We feed more than 450,000 meals to roughly 2,500 kids across Canada every year, however there are many more that still go hungry.
Our program has been shown to improve children’s test scores, reading skills, health and attendance, as well as showing a positive influence on students’ behaviour.
