Early in the morning of Februray 14th, a despicable attack took place on a Winnipeg Transit driver at the University of Manitoba. Each day and night, thousands of students rely on the many dedicated Winnipeg Transit drivers to get either to or from the University of Manitoba. For many students, education would be out of reach without the services provided by drivers like Irvine Fraser. Today we must rally around his family and friends who are mourning the loss of a loved one. I have created this GoFundMe as an opportunity for students and staff at UManitoba as well as members of the Winnipeg community to donate towards funeral expenses in addition to thanking Irvine for his dedication to public transportation and supporting his loved ones during this terrible time. Even small donations will make a difference.

In less than 48 hours, we reached the $5,000 goal to raise money for the family Mr. Fraser left behind. I'm happy to report that his wife has been added as a beneficiary to this GoFundMe and will complete the registration through "WePay" when she is ready. Thanks everyone for all your contributions and be sure to thank your transit drivers as you part ways for the day.

Hello everyone,

Wow... I can't believe we've surpassed the $3000 dollar mark already! I am immensely proud in the way that the community has come together to support Mr. Fraser's family. At this moment in time, I have two priorities. The first is to raise as much money as possible both through this GoFundMe and one set up by a colleague of Mr. Fraser. The second is to give the family the time and privacy they need to grieve through this difficult time. My contact information will be passed on to his family and they will contact me when they are ready so that I can add them as a beneficiary.

In the meantime, a beautiful friend of mine came up with the idea of making thank-you and sympathy cards for the many Winnipeg Transit employees that in the face of tragedy, continued their hard work to get Winnipeggers to and from their destination. If you're unable to donate or even if you have, please consider making a small card for the next transit driver that crosses your path.

Hi Eric, The family of Mr. Fraser is receiving the funds and I would like you to keep that in mind. This GoFundMe is in place to honour a life lost while working in public transportation and to highlight the importance the Winnipeg Transit employees have in the day to day lives of people, particularly students.

Hi Collette, while there are two GoFundMe pages, the money will make its way to the family in both cases. The pages were just created at different times by different members of the community. This one was originally shared among the UManitoba community and the other was started by a Winnipeg Transit employee. At the moment, we are working on setting up Mr. Fraser's family as a beneficiary. From there they will be in control of the funds. At the moment, I am just the communicator and don't have access to the funds donated. They will be released when a beneficiary is assigned.

Hi Patricia, GoFundMe has several safeguards in place to ensure that the money goes to the right place. Currently, my information has been passed on to his family and they will contact me in order to make them a "beneficiary" for this campaign. The other campaign is run by one of his coworkers at Winnipeg Transit and has received a bit more media attention resulting in the higher amount. Both are legitimate and the funds from both will find their way to the family when the family is ready to reach out :)

Does anyone monitor these Go Fund Me sites to make sure the funds go to the family? I've seen 2 for Irvine Fraser's family already today. One has raised almost $8000 and the other has raised over $3000.
