Indy's Recovery Fund
On Friday March 24, 2017 at 7:15pm, my 1 year 9 month old Appaloosa filly named "Indy" was attacked by a coyote at our farm (Canadian Frost Farm) at Crowe's Landing on Stoney Lake, ON. My 3 horses come in the barn, in the evening to have their evening grain, then are turned back out for the rest of the night. My horses came in as usual on Friday night (when this happened) and were turned back out. When getting back into the paddock, "Indy" ran down to the run in shed, a short distance down the hill from the paddock gate they are led in, and did not return. I was not alarmed at first, as I often put hay out down by the run in, however she did not return. I proceeded to pick up manure and check the water trough (by the gate), when I heard loud screams coming from my filly, Indy, along with thrashing noises. I immediately (with manure fork in hand) ran down to the run in where I found her on right down on the ground with the coyote on top of her ripping her front leg. I was also yelling and screaming from the time I heard the noise, to after I got to her. The coyote, after hearing and seeing me jumped back and off of the filly and took off into the bush. The filly continued to flail on the ground and I had to help her, to get her back on her feet.
This attack was an emergency, after hours vet call.
The filly suffered a large 8 inch gash right to the bone on her right front leg, as well as a small gash on her back leg, and nose. Indy was very lucky, as her front leg wound was very close to exposing tendons and ligaments of the knee.
My vet was able to stitch the wound, however the risk of infection is high. The procedure only has a 50/50 chance of healing correctly, as the stitching was done over the knee joint and is likely to tear. If this treatment fails, Indy will need multiple additional treatments and medications.
My vet has Indy has placed Indy on stall rest for an estimated period of 3 weeks (meaning that Indy is confined to her stall only, for 24 hours a day.) This time has potential to increase. Indy has also been placed on sedation (to help her remain sane while being in her stall for 24 hours), a pain medication and anti-biotic. My vet has also requested follow up appointments.
I am asking for donations in support of Indy's vet bill to ensure that she recieves the ultimate care and support required to make a full recovery from this attack as I am a current student of Trent University.
