Back Home Again in Indiana

I grew up and went to school in Indiana before moving to Washington, DC and to Brooklyn, NY.   I left my friends and family for 25 years, not visiting Indiana often.  I changed how I thought about the world, but most of the people I know in Indiana did not.  I want to try and change that.

This election woke me up--I was in Chicago on election day seeing the show, "Fun Home" when I started to think that Trump may very well win the election.  Two days later, I was in my hometown of Wakarusa, IN where I saw Trump signs all over and discovered that people who I know and like voted for him.   I learned a lot about what drove people to vote for Trump...and its not what you think!

Through this documentary, I want to interview friends, family and anyone throughout Indiana that I know (or not) and have them talk--express themselves to understand why their vote for Trump may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but...

I would tie it all together with research on small town, rural America and how Washington works,  having worked on both sides of Congress, at POLITICO, and the National Journal.

I am reaching back and trying to bring my home state along into the future and could use your help and support.  Thank you!

If you want to get a sense about what I want to do with this documentary, this is as close as I have seen to the truth of why Trump is president.

Now imagine me, rather than Van, and Indiana, rather than Ohio. No political ideology but human to human...how do we think completely differently?
This is what I want to do--Van is right

I have been thinking a lot about those who call Indiana home...Kurt Vonnegut, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, David Letterman, Michael Jackson among others and what they shared in common. Is it Indiana that drives some people to the top of their respective fields?

I am funding a large part of this project with my own savings, but I had no idea how expensive a camera crew, post-production, research, and that is not the most expensive part. That is when I try to get rights to music, video clips, TV shows, other things that are important to the story. So, I know, on the whole, this film is not that important...but if you give up Starbucks, that would be at least a thousand right there :-)

Love what you're doing and look forward to seeing this come to fruition, even if I believe they're the ones living in a bubble, not those of us who have expanded our horizons.
