Across the UK over 2 milion people suffer from Hypothyroidism. Many 1000's more are struggling to get a diagnosis. Current testing and treatment protocols are failing all these people. Leaving people undiagnosed due to incorrect blood test ranges, struggling with symptoms and with incorrect treatment. Those diagnosed are often under or incorrectly medicated, again due to insufficient testing methods. We are campaigning to change this to help people get well and save the NHS money.
Diagnosed or not, patients with continuing symptoms are given a large range of other medications to treat the symptoms rather than the cause. This is costing the NHS and you the tax payer millions unnecessarily. But more importantly adversly affecting peoples lives, leaving them with debilitating symptoms and often ruining lives.
We need money to advertise our campaign, to achieve a large Petition, with posters, press adverts and street campaigning. Due to the current situation of poor knowledge of our chronic condition, many patients and doctors believe that their other symptoms are not thyroid related. Patients are told your thyroid levels are fine, when often they are not. Other drugs are then prescribed to treat symptoms such as - depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypertension, palpitations, heart problems, hypoglycaemia, fatigue, weight gain, and more. Which are all symptoms of an under active / under medicated thyroid. Often patients aren't even aware that they don't need endless other medications, they just need their thyroid medication adjusting or changing from the standard Levothyroxine to alternatives such as liothyronine or NDT. Because of this we want to do street campaigning to inform people of the situation and collect signatures for our petition.
