Edible insect production for refugees in Uganda

Donation protected
Support refugees in Uganda to produce edible insects as a source of income and nutrition.

Edible insects are recognised as a valuable source of protein and other nutrients. In addition, they are easy and cheap to produce, requiring little feed, water and space.

This makes production of edible insects an attractive option for people who lack access to land or resources for farm inputs, especially in areas where there is limited access to nutritious food.

This is the case in Uganda, which is host to more than one million refugees from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Impact Designs is a Danish NGO dedicated to developing innovative business models for refugees in some of the world's poorest nations.

In the Kyaka II settlement in Uganda, we are working with the Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian agencies, to pilot production of mealworm among the refugees.

If we are successful this has the potential to change the lives of thousands of refugee families.

The Kyaka II refugee settlement is located about three hours’ drive west of the capital Kampala and is home to about 67,000 Congolese refugees. That number is set to increase in the coming months, as conflict in Congo continues.

Food insecurity is high among the refugees, most live in extreme poverty and few can afford meat. As a result, malnutrition is widespread. There is an urgent need for new sources of income and nutrition.

Edible insects, such as mealworm, can provide this. They are easy and cheap to produce, and have a high content of protein and nutrients.

Several species of insects are widely consumed in both Congo and Uganda and there is a lot of interest in starting production of edible insects among the refugees.

We have assembled an international team of experts in humanitarian aid and insect production who are all donating their time to the project.

But we need funds to cover the costs of offering training to refugees to become producers of mealworm. This includes the cost of travel and accommodation for trainers and materials for production kits.

Your support will enable us to start piloting production in February 2019.

By donating at least 10 dollars, you can become a member of Impact Designs and support our work to design sustainable, market based, business models for refugees in Uganda.
