Pass the Mic!

$4,470 of $7,500 goal

"Pass the Mic" is Portland Meet Portland's first annual week-long Immigrant and Refugee Youth Music Camp! The Music Camp will culminate with a LIVE community performance of the youth. This camp will be ABSOLUTELY FREE to the 20 youth we’ll include and to the concert goers.

Portland Meet Portland is teaming up with Wilson Vediner, who helped start the highly successful Pendleton Rock Camp and guitarist for Portland based bands Months and Point Juncture, WA. Through this collaboration, we will pilot the first 2018 Pass the Mic Music Camp in mid-July to serve the creative needs of immigrant and refugee youth in Portland and to foster cross-cultural relationship building through music!

At Pass the Mic, immigrant and refugee youth will form bands and learn songwriting, how to play instruments, how to run technical equipment, how to design and create band logos, how to collaborate musically, and other things essential to performing the enjoyment of building cross-cultural community.

Finding and exploring voice, belonging, and identity as an immigrant or refugee youth is often a struggle, especially when doing well in school, providing resources to their family, and obligations to their community can be draining. These youth are in need of creative, fun, and engaging spaces to develop themselves as people (personally and professionally). This camp provides that opportunity through cross-cultural collaboration and expression.

We have talked to several individuals, organizations, and even staff of Portland Public Schools who work with immigrant and refugee youth and we all agree....WE NEED THIS MUSIC CAMP!

What we have in place:

1. Committed camp counselors who are both locally and nationally recognized musicians
2. A culturally appropriate organization where the camp can live and be sustained
3. A proven rock camp program template and curriculum
4. A fearless leader (Wilson Vediner)!
5. Opportunities for community outreach and advertising
6. Youth who want to participate
7. Potential spaces for the camp and the performance venue

With your contributions, we will be able to:

1. Pay stipends to camp counselors
2. Pay for space rental for the camp and the performance
3. Feed the kids during the day
4. Rent equipment and buy camp supplies
5. Make tee shirts and CDs of the youths’ music
6. Advertise and market the camp

All this will set us up for success this year and for years to come.

We hope to raise $7,500 by July 16th (the day the camp starts)!

Donate to this project and put your money to work for celebrating diversity and making Portland a home for our local immigrant and refugee youth!

Hey All!

I wanted to share with you the fruits of what you helped seed through your many donations and contributions. Please see this short video :-)

We really really could not have done this at all without your support. Each one of you was crucial to giving these immigrant and refugee youth the chance to express and discover themselves in ways that had not previously known possible. You can see the joy and energy in the room.

You all helped us provide a free week-long music camp with highly skilled teachers and a proven pedagogy to 17 youth from seven countries. 130 people attended the concert. We are honored that you chose to partner with us in our first year, and we hope you’ll continue to be a part of this project as it grows and involves more local immigrant and refugee youth.

Here also, we want to share with you some of what the youth said about what you helped make possible.

One student told us:

Music camp was awesome for me. It is a perfect place for those who don’t have the opportunity or for English learners to study instrument. At music camp, I can meet more friends and more nice teachers. Everyone at the music camp is very enthusiastic and fun. I have been really enjoying music camp. It was perfect.

Another said:

Music camp is amazing camp.

And a third simply said:

It was swag.

We are thrilled to have the support of community members like you, and together we can continue to help our immigrant and refugee youth gain the ability to express themselves in music and make our city more vibrant and inclusive.

We would love to remain in closer connection with you all! If you would like to stay in the loop about the further work of Pass the Mic and Portland Meet Portland, Please send us a note and your email and other contact information to:

Portland Meet Portland's Immigrant and Refugee Music Camp now has a name :-)

We are now calling our music camp "Pass the Mic"!

This name evokes what we wish to make central to this camp: collaboration among the voices of those who continue to be underrepresented and unheard in our society. We will be accompanying these immigrant and refugee youth and passing the mic to them to amplify their voices onto our community.
