Keep ICB Serving IL Blind Community

$805 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 13 people in 41 months
Are you aware that there are an estimated 62,096 blind or visually impaired people in Illinois?  Additionally, there are an estimated 187,531 elderly persons (age 65 and over) who have difficulty reading normal print with eyeglasses, and 47,193 elderly persons who cannot read normal print with eyeglasses.  These individuals will require service and peer counseling.

The mission of the Illinois Council of the Blind is to assist blind and visually impaired people by helping them to become involved in their communities, train for work, manage their own lives, and avoid unnecessary dependence on others.  Two examples of the difference our organization is making are:

1. Initiation of a reading program called Dots for Tots which throughout the state provides children who are blind or visually impaired to receive books in Braille, Large Print or other formats which they can read and use to build their own libraries as sighted children do.

2. ICB along with American Council of the Blind and California Council of the Blind was instrumental in making a recent agreement with Walgreens Pharmacy to provide accessible medical prescription label information available to all blind and visual impaired customers throughout the United States.

The Illinois Council of the Blind needs $50,000 annually to support its services. All projects undertaken by ICB are manned by volunteers and a one-person part time office manager.  Most of the money we receive goes to fund our programs and fulfilling the mission of ICB.

We rely heavily on the generosity from you and other individuals because our services are provided free.  In recent years we lost major funding sources that as a result has greatly impacted ICB’s ability to continue to provide service to Illinois residents in the foreseeable future.  While our board has worked diligently to cut expenses and seek other grant and funding options, it has not been enough and we recently were forced to dip into our investment funds to continue to pay our bills.  This is not good business practice and will not sustain ICB for much longer.
The Illinois Council of the Blind is a registered non-profit organization.  If you believe that everyone has his or her right to the American dream, please help us to make that happen.  We thank you in advance for your time, attention and consideration.  More information about the Illinois Council of the Blind is available on our website:
