Last summer an incredible opportunity was presented to us when we both received an email from a cycling club looking for volunteers to help children with disabilities learn to ride a bike. Together, both of us, Diane and Judy volunteered for the camp. We didn’t really know much about the program but signed up thinking it couldn’t be hard…after all we rode bikes. Diane’s nephew, Ryan, a high school student also signed up to fulfill some of his required community service hours.
The goal of the camp is for kids to ride independently by the end of a week of training from iCan Shine Staff and volunteers. Each child was paired with 2-3 volunteers who constantly encouraged and talked to the child as they rode around the gym.
It was a challenging and rewarding experience for all of us. Ryan said, “It was a great feeling to see the kids become independent and to know that I helped make that happen”. For the campers, it built self-esteem and improved confidence and physical fitness. Biking has the potential for being a family activity since everyone can ride together. For the campers, biking proved to be a monumental accomplishment. Everyone from campers to parents and volunteers were thrilled with the iCan Bike experience!
We were so taken with iCan Bike camp week that we spoke to the director about bringing the iCan Bike camp to another area of NJ in need of such a program. As a result of our conversation, we decided to start a camp in Morris County. iCan Bike is part of iCan Shine, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which was started in 2007.
We are very excited to bring iCan Bike to Morris County next summer from August 6-10, 2018 at the County College of Morris. With your help, we will be able to accomplish our goal. Donations of any amount will help with the expenses needed for running the camp. This is a unique and rewarding program that benefits not only those with disabilities and also our community. We hope you will join us in our fundraising efforts.
