I NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE

$5,475 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 69 people in 9 months
Over the years, I have helped many of you, in one way or another. Now I am asking for your help. All my life I have been self-reliant. So this is very hard for me to do.

Here is my story:

Upon graduation from High School, my dream was to move from NY City to Los Angeles to start working my way up in the field of movie and/or TV production. However, it was much more important than me and my older brother get an apartment and move my mother in with us to get her out of a situation where my alcoholic father was constantly beating her. They could not afford a divorce, so this needed to be done and I put my primary dream away.

However I did manage to get a job in The United Artists Pictures mail room and then continued for over 35 years working for various companies, including 9 years at United Artists, 16 years at Columbia Pictures, and various amounts of times at Allied Artists Pictures, Lorimar Pictures, Hemdale Releasing, Gramercy Pictures and Miramax Films. All in movie distribution.

In the year 2000, when I was out of work after my last position, my brother who I still lived with, long after my mother passed away, needed major open heart surgery to replace a valve and fix a hole in his heart that he had since birth. After this surgery, he would need someone with him around the clock. So my choice was a live-in nurse (which we could not afford) or a nursing home or since I was not able to find a new job in a year of looking one, me staying home taking care of him. I felt it was my duty to take care of him at home.

I had put away a sizable amount of money for my retirement in which I planned to do some traveling beyond what I did while working which included a dozen or so vacation trips and work trips to Los Angeles. I ended up using this money to stay home with my brother. Later on, he needed hip replacement surgery, which made his condition even worse. Then he came down with bladder cancer. During the treatment for this last ailment in the hospital, he contracted a bacterial infection and passed away. He had some of his retirement money left which came to me. It enabled me to live on it, with the help of Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers which paid for my monthly health insurance, which at that time was $1000 a month, until I was 65 and was able to get Medicare. I also, at age 62 got my Social Security and my IATSE union pension, both at reduced amounts. By that time any money I had inherited was gone. This proved not enough for me to live on and forced me to file bankruptcy about 7 years ago.

Since then with costs keep going up and my pension and Social Security basically staying the same, in order to survive I needed to use several credit cards, which I have now maxed out. Also 7 years ago I was able to receive $99 in food stamps. Unfortunately, every year when my Social Security went up or the amount of earnings to qualify went up, my food stamps were constantly lowered to where it is now at ZERO. So that made me get and use more credit cards to pay for food. My doctor wants me to eat healthier food but with no food stamps, no extra money and no credit left, I can only afford the cheapest unhealthiest foods. And thus put me in the position I am now in of debt in excess of $15,000 and no way anymore to pay even minimums on many of the cards.

I have tried to get help from organizations but unfortunately, I fall in the middle, I make too much money to get their assistance but too little money to survive on and they all rejected helping me. Filing bankruptcy again is on the horizon in a year but I need to survive that year first. Thus my coming to you for financial assistance. Believe me, I would really prefer being on the giving end and not on the needing end and this is totally embarrassing for me to do at all since I have never asked anyone for help before and have always been quite self-sufficient and the person who helped others.

I spend most of my days now watching TV and going on social media at home. The only things I can afford to do outside are my daily walks in my neighborhood and going to my movies in nearby theaters which is for free, courtesy of The WILL ROGERS GOLDEN MOVIE PASS which is good for the rest of my life at all major theater circuit theaters in the Country. Thus the movie reviews I post. But as my regular review followers may realize I no longer go to movies daily but on the average once a week since I can only afford to go to movies I can walk to at theatres that take my pass and that limits me to what I can see and rules out most limited release indie movies which were my favorite kind of movie to see in the past.

That is my story. Thank you for reading it and thank you for any assistance you can give to me at this time.

I once again thank everyone who has helped me here over the past 9 months. Some of you even multiple times. This fundraising campaign is coming to an end next week since I have come to realize that I am now on my own. In the weeks to come, I have doctor appointments to determine what direction I need to take to be healthy based on new test results at that point, decisions to reach regarding my medicare coverage for 2020 including any changes that will be made for the better or more likely for the worse which usually is the case and increases from Spectrum for my internet access which is guaranteed to occur. So when I analyze them all I will be making up a new budget and determine what needs to be eliminated from my life that is still remaining. Again thank you, everyone, for putting up with me the past 9 months.

Based on the response to my update from last month, I'm getting used to almost no one helping me and realize I am almost entirely on my own to solve my financial problems related to my health issues. I do thank the four "friends", JOHN COLLOCA, DON ROSEN, WILLIAM LEON, STEVE FLYNN who did come across enabling me healthy food for about two months and paying some of my doctors' co-pays. And for my birthday from TIMOTHY ROBERTS.

I'll let you know soon what my future plans will be to get the money that I need for healthier food and many future doctor co-pays to come since it will likely involve giving up my access to the internet.

Again I am thankful for the help many of you gave me last year and earlier this year.

For about 10 years I was receiving $99 in monthly food stamps. Federal cuts made two years ago brought it down to $15.00. This year it was cut to zero. Our President needed my food stamp money and other senior services money that is supposed to provide healthy food and assistance to seniors and others in need to pay for his tax cut for corporations and rich people. And another serious problem coming soon is the gutting of Obamacare with no replacement. This will affect Medicare drug plans where many seniors including myself taking 4 daily maintenance drugs and probably more to come after my next doctor visit, will no longer be able to afford them especially in the latter part of each year. Our President, without a trial, has basically given me a death sentence. Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers cannot help me now but will likely help pay for my funeral expenses. And that my friends is my problem in a nutshell. It really sucks to live in a country where senior citizens in trouble are ignored by people in high places and organizations who claim to help seniors but don't for one reason or another and leave them no place to turn for help but on Go Fund Me. In any case, I was 75 years old on August 11th. None of my immediate family lived past the mid-60s.

Thank you for anything you can do to help me out at this time and I am sorry to keep asking for your help. But I have no place else to go.

My remaining problem is still not having enough income monthly to pay for healthy food to avoid getting Diabetes next year.

I went over my monthly budget with experts (for free) to see what kind of further cutbacks I can make to come up with the extra $100, in addition to the amount allocated in my budget for food, to afford healthier food than I am not able to purchase at the moment. I have made all the cutbacks I can make and still have some kind of life. And I have found the opposite and that is as I age and medical issues mount my monthly co-pays for various doctors and medications also mount. And these come before healthier food. My rent accounts for 65% of what I have coming in from my Social Security and small IATSE pension. I do not qualify for Food stamps anymore due to Federal cutbacks the last two years, Medicaid or any services dependent on having Medicaid. WILL ROGERS MOTION PICTURE PIONEERS turned me down for financial help at this time. However, they let it be known to me that if and when my medical conditions deteriorate they will likely be able to assist me. At this time I can only afford to buy cheap unhealthy food. I am not going hungry. I am eating two meals a day but cheap unhealthy food as I said.

The only outside activity I can afford is my movies, which of course are covered by my WILL ROGERS GOLDEN MOVIE PASS. I love my movies, all though in recent years have cut back on the amount I see in theatres to those showing within walking distance. I do see movies I miss in theatres via Netflix DVDs, which a good friend has given me as a gift for the second year in a row now. This works fine for me. I do not like streaming movies from the internet at all and I do not ever intend to do it. I also, weather permitting, take an hour's walk in my neighborhood each day.

So what I am asking here is for contributions from my friends. My plans are to save any money I receive here now and spread it out at the rate of $100 a month for that healthy food for as long as it lasts. And hopefully will not have to come back here in the future. I hate doing this since I have been in the past such a self-reliant person.

Incidentally, next month I will be 75 years old. So consider any donation to be an advance birthday gift.

Thank you very much for any help you can be for me.

I know in my update from Friday I said that would be my last post of this subject. However, several of you have come up with suggestions to help me other than monetary donations, I addressed these personally but I wanted to address them for everyone.

One suggestion was to go to a soup kitchen for a meal each day. However, in my research, I have found that they are all geared to feeding low-income hungry people. So-called "one size fits all meals". They are not geared for special dietary needs. In addition in my area, most have income and Medicaid requirements. Since my income is above $16,000 a year, I do not qualify for either the meals or Medicaid. While "Meals on wheels" and other food delivery for homebound seniors do cater to dietary needs, they only go to "homebound" seniors who cannot go out. Of course, as of now, I do not fall into that category either.

Another suggestion is to get a job, even part-time. I have gone into every place, office and store in my area with a help wanted sign posted there or online in a local group I belong to on Facebook. So far everyone told me (about a dozen places) I do not have the necessary experience required. I find that having worked 37 years in booking and sales in the movie industry does not qualify you for any other job outside the industry.

Therefore my reliance on the help of friends. Thank you again for reading this. Have a good week.
