Hi, My name is Katie and I wondered if you would be able to support me to LIVE MY LIFE.  I’m too young for just quality, I want to grow old, I want to see the world more and I want to enjoy my life with my family and friends for as long as I can.

This is my story. I am 39 years old and living with stage 4 colorectal cancer which has now spread to my liver and also my lung. I was diagnosed with cancer on the 19th May 2017. I had felt unwell for years, and after many visits to the doctor’s surgery with stomach complaints, bloating and extreme tiredness and being sent away none the wiser, I felt like I was wasting their time. Hence I became depressed which caused me to avoid social situations.  I saw a nutritionist, had colonic irrigation and sought herbal alternatives… nothing worked.

I had no symptoms of bowel cancer and there is no family history of the disease in my family so it was never something the doctor looked into.   I haven’t blamed the doctor for not delving further into my symptoms, I felt it wasn’t his fault however, I do think that if a person comes to their doctor, regardless of age, medical and family history, they should be listened to and investigated further -  we know our own bodies and people should be listened to.

On June 2nd 2017, I had an operation to remove the large tumour from my bowel, during which they found a cyst the size of a watermelon on my ovary which they also removed for good measure. I am happy to say that that has remained clear and my treatment now is for the tumour on my liver and lung. As the tumour on my liver is in a very difficult position, I am continuing with chemotherapy which is keeping the tumour stable. This is why I am now trying to raise funds through GoFundMe which will pay for the trial drugs that are available for my situation and will help me fight to live.

During the hardest and darkest times of my life, I have had the continuous support from Polly, Gay and the team at the Pickering Cancer Drop-in  Centre in Tunbridge Wells. The Centre offers more than just therapies and counselling for cancer patients and their friends and family, they offer a safe haven and place to go when you feel alone and ready to give up. Polly can always lift me out of the dark places that I go to encouraging me to stay strong, positive and she keeps me focussed.

Any support you can give to help me to live, love & laugh a lot longer would be more than gratefully appreciated. I know I am a stranger to you, but I have so much left to give to life.

Love & hugs

Katie x
