Family House Fire

Donation protected
Our family home is gone, completely destroyed by a fire that ravaged through it on December 13th at 1:00am. Thankfully, my mom is alive today because she awoke to the neighbors dogs barking continually and was able to get out minutes before the roof caved in. She sat in her car with her cat and a pair of shoes, the only two things she could grab in time, and watched the flames engulf our home while the firefighters hurried over to extinguish it and save whatever they could safely reach.

Less than two weeks from now, it would be the place our family would come together at to celebrate the holidays. My mom bought this home just over one year ago and hadn’t even lived there a full year. Yet, in that short time she worked tirelessly to transform it into a beautiful place for generations to come. It was filled with mementos from grandparents and great grandparents. The rocking chair my grandma spent her days in, the love letters my grandpa wrote to her, my baby clothes I tucked away to keep for my children someday and so much more - all gone.  Our home was a keeper of heirlooms, of irreplaceable items that were a link to the past and a reminder of our family's roots. Losing these keepsakes has deeply saddened us.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, so at the moment all we can do is speculate. The Fire Marshal informed us that the house is 100 percent damaged. We will have to rebuild from the ground up. My mom is a single parent who raised four children on her own. Her life savings went into purchasing this home. This same time last year her health was severely jeopardized and we nearly lost her. At that time, her health was our first priority and so when home insurance premiums tripled because of the fires in Northern California, she wasn’t in a position to financially pay for her health needs and home protection. She went back to work, pushing through the pain from still needing a surgery to fix what had been done incorrectly and began putting funds aside to meet the premium cost. She simply ran out of time. The fire came before she could get any coverage and we lost so much.

During the short time she has lived in Yosemite Lakes Park, she has met so many wonderful people. In nearly every conversation we’ve had together since she’s become a resident there, she would talk about how supportive her community was, how they looked out for one another and wouldn’t think twice about helping a fellow community member. She has spent her short time there taking care of elderly men and women, making them dinners and running their errands. She’s loved every minute of it. She is a servant at heart. Right now, more than ever, she needs love and support from her friends and everyone in her community. The best gift you can give our family this season is the hope that one day soon we will be able to come together as a family once more around her table, under the roof of a home built from the kindness and goodness of friends, neighbors, and the wonderful people we’ve yet to meet. Thank you so much for your support.
