A group of residents have collaborated to form a free and independent local news organization, Hyattsville Independent Media, a non-profit organization, which is putting together the online publication http://HyattsvilleToday.com.

By donating a few dollars to this project, you make sure that we can do even more with limited resources.  The money from this fundraiser will be used for initial start-up costs that have already been spent, which include incorporation ($260), a 501(c)3 non-profit application ($400) and web hosting this first year ($320). These funds will cover membership in the National Newspaper Association ($500), which gives us access to many resources.  Additionally, we'd like to have additional seed money to give a small number of staff writers limited compensation this year and for outreach as we build our brand.

By you donating to this project, you are helping the local community. The motivation for this project is born from my commitment to local news and first-hand knowledge of the power of an informed community. From real-time reporting on the Hyattsville City Council to real-time coverage of crime, community events, massive water main breaks, power outages, and severe weather, the most important news happens right down the street.

I am writing from one of my favorite work spaces at our dining room table. The sunlight through the window behind me is a reminder of all of the incredible breaking news stories that I have covered for the local community from this very spot. I followed every 2015 winter snow storm from this chair, including the storm on Feb. 21, 2015 that accumulated more than four inches of snow. And despite the recent mild weather, let’s not forget the recent Blizzard of 2016, which I excitedly reported while standing in my kitchen so that I could see out the window as I wrote about current conditions.

From my front porch by flashlight, with no power in our house and a dying cell phone, I covered the recent hail storm, which took down tree after tree and sliced a house in half like butter.

I was the only local media representative present when several of our neighborhoods welcomed several Syrian families into the neighborhood after fleeing their war-torn country.

I reported little-known details about the new Hyattsville Branch Library because I hear what community members tell me they care about and I follow those stories, and I wait for the whispers.

I am committed to keeping local residents informed about what is happening down the street from them. News is my passion, and I believe it is a vital service that truly makes a difference in our lives.

If you would like to be a part of Hyattsville Independent Media, we are recruiting general volunteers, writers, photographers, and board members in and close to the City of Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, University Park, Mount Rainier, Edmonston, Brentwood, North Brentwood, Lewisdale and College Heights Estates.
