I am Marco Johnson, a retired Chicago police officer, and I’ve started my own nonprofit organization here in Chicago called Stomping Out Drugs and Gangs. Our goal is to eliminate gangs, decrease the violence in our communities and give at-risk inner-city children a positive alternative to drugs and gang life.
We want our children to finish school and apply for jobs. We want our children to grow to adulthood and raise families of their own. We believe we can accomplish this through hands-on sports and mentoring programs that offer at-risk children the support, education and encouragement they may not find at home.
Stomping Out Drugs and Gangs is unique in that it is organized and run by dedicated police officers who volunteer their time mentoring children. Studies show that a child is more likely to obey the law when a policeman has been a part of his or her life. Early intervention is the key to keeping at-risk children away from gangs. Your donation will help us offer this intervention.
Stomping Out Drugs and Gangs is a grassroots effort. We are a 501c3, but have been awarded no grants. Our officers are not wealthy people and, at present, we have very few donors. But the violence in our communities increases, and the needs of our children are great.
What do we need? We need sports equipment, staff, referees, tutors, uniforms, food, books. We need people concerned about and dedicate to the future of our children. We need you!
Our financial goal? $20,000. This would allow us to build an outdoor sports complex for our children in the heart of the inner city, complete with spectator stands and a PA system. Once we’ve reached this goal, we will make plans to build the next complex in another high-crime area, followed by another, and another… We believe we can make this difference!
