Hoson House Home Concert Renovation

Hoson House is a non-profit organization, which was founded by Chizuko Asada in March 2013 as a community outreach center for music and the arts. It was inspired by her late grandfather, Hoson Asada, a well-known Japanese calligraphy (shodo) artist.

It has been Chizuko's dream, as a classical pianist and teacher, to create a place where performers and audiences share and exchange the experience of music in an intimate setting. Large modern concert halls deny classical music performers and their audiences the intimacy of the salons of Mozart and Chopin's era. Hoson Room—where Hoson’s works are displayed—reflects this ideal, equipped with two grand pianos and 80 seats, creating a thrilling experience for performers and audiences alike.

It’s been a great success so far. Since Hoson House’s inauguration in 2013, many first-rate performers have performed both solo and chamber music. Hoson House also provides valuable performance opportunities to young artists and college music majors, and is often available to private music teachers and organizations as well.

The performance and preservation of acoustic jazz is important both to local musicians and to our community. From the beginning, Hoson House has been fortunate to have Chris Wabich, a nationally known jazz and classical percussionist, as the director of its jazz division. The goal of Hoson Jazz is to bring talented jazz musicians into an environment where the audience can focus solely on the music.

In March 2014 Hoson added a visual arts gallery to the Pagoda Room, providing a venue for local artists to display and share their work, with Talia Golian as Hoson Art Director. In January 2015, Hoson House received a grant from Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts (TACFA) for the installation of a wheelchair entrance. We are excited to be more and more involved in our community.

Hoson House is a resource for musicians, artists, and people who love music and the arts to experience, preserve, and nurture their presence in our community. We are happy and proud to bring the finest music and art—past and future—to the community, and to an ever-expanding audience.

All contribution to Hoson House is tax-deductible. Pleaese join us for the effort to keep the music and arts alive in the community!

Hoson House has become my absolute favorite  venue in Orange County. It is a warm, intimate and extremely musical environment. Chi has created a beautiful and supportive performance space where artists can explore and stretch themselves creatively. The intensity and intimacy possible between musician and audience in this salon setting is very special.   I highly recommend that you come and experience the magic that takes place in this beautiful little jewel in Tustin. -- Karen Gallinger (jazz singer)

Hoson House is a performance space with that rare combination that serves and exhilarates both the performers and audience.  Our shows have been among our most enjoyable because of intimate nature of the room, and the beautiful hospitality of everyone one involved with Hoson House. Add a pair of first rate pianos and a great sounding room, and it becomes clear to see that this space is a musical dream come true.   Thank you Chi and Chris for all of the work and love that you put into this awesome performance space. You have served the artistic community - both performer and listener -  in great measure. -- Tom Zink  (jazz pianist)

I have been traveling and performing all over the world. And was lucky enough to play in all sorts of venues - from very large and prestigious halls to very intimate and small venues. Hoson House was truly unique and unforgettable. Beautiful and intimate atmosphere, amazing and supportive audience, great pianos, great host... I can go on. In the last 10 years, I can safely say that it was one of the most memorable experiences I had performing. I surely hope that Chi and company will be able to continue this series for years to come, so more artists can enjoy performing there!! A Must in every respect!!!!!! -- Vassily Primakov  (Concert Pianist, Producer and President of LP Classics)

Hoson House is a treasure, and my favorite musical space both as a performer and a listener. Its creation was a labor of love for Chi Asada, and you can tell she’s created something really special here. The audience can understand and connect personally with both the performer and the music: especially as a classical performer, it’s great to be able to talk with the audience about the music, which may not always be accessible to modern ears. I believe this kind of space is the future for classical music. This is how it’s meant to be played and heard! -- Julian Delfino (Classical pianist)

Almost three years years ago, a young talented women had a vision of bringing  a small private venue for intimate concerts and art to the community of Tustin. Fortunately  for many, Chi Asada made that dream a reality.  Hoson House now features a variety of  world class musicians  and young, talented artists on a weekly basis.  In my opinion, Hosan  House  is a like a precious "Gem" in the community.  Experiencing this lovely setting in a  private residence with great music is a must for everyone! --  Kathy Tarrant  (Supporter/Former member of the Tustin Area Council of Fine Arts)

Hoson House provides a valuable service to Southern California: A house concert series specializing in Classical recitals and Chamber Music. I had hoped for such a venue in my community for a long time, and was happy to learn of its existence, even happier to be asked to present a program! My experience performing at Hoson House in October 2015 was wonderful: I had an attentive and appreciative audience, who were at ease in a welcoming venue in a charming neighborhood. The acoustics of the concert room are just about perfect for Chamber Music, inspiring the performers to play their best for the intimate gathering. I look forward to giving many more performances at Hoson House in the months and years to come. -- Evan J. Marshall  (Mandolinist)

As a performer for the Hoson House Series last year, I was treated with the utmost respect and appreciation. The audience was full and enthusiastic and the atmosphere was warm and intellectually stimulating. Chizuko Asada has created an important venue for the musical community and the community at large and I admire her energy and vision in creating this wonderful space in which music flourishes and reaches many who would otherwise not have exposure to great music. I am strongly in favor of increases in support for this thriving venture. -- Lorna Griffitt, D.M. (Concert Pianist/Piano Professor at University of California, Irvine)

House venues like the Hoson House are both the future and past of concert venues - with ties to the history of salon recitals and the modern independent artist, few spaces allow for such an intimate relationship between the artist and fans. The Hoson House, in particular, being able to boast a capacity larger than most house venues, still maintains that relationship that is so important and relevant to many during a time when online streaming is rampant and live performance demand is on the rise. I look forward to performing mixed programs every time there every time I am in town, where the audience is always enthusiastic and open to new ideas - I strongly recommend this venue for anybody who is looking for great music in Orange County in an engaging setting.-- Kai Ono (College student majoring in piano)

My love affair with music started when I was about three years old, and my mother allowed me to play her 78-RPM symphonic records on her record player, since this was before 33-1/3rd-RPM records, Hi-fi, or stereo.  When I was older I started going to concerts and clubs, but the experience was not quite right because it was all amplified music, and the settings were too large and certainly not intimate.  The clubs were noisy, and the sound at the concerts was distorted to the point of being unpleasant.  Then my friend, Karen Gallinger, suggested that I allow her to have solons at my house, where one could enjoy very intimate, acoustic music without noise or distortion.  I agreed immediately.  However, my house and baby grand were just a little too small.

Then Chi came along and created Hoson House, which appears to be the Goldilocks combination, not to big, not too small, acoustic music, intimate setting, interaction with the musicians, etc. (In other words, just right.)  Hoson House brings a completely unique service to the community that allows people to experience music as it should be, intimate, personal, and acoustic.  It particularly allows young people the opportunity to hear and see music as it is being produced just an arm’s-length away, and then they get to talk to the musicians on the break.  In addition, the musicians have the opportunity to interact with the audience and explain the intricacies and background of the music being performed and the path their career has taken that got them to Hoson House.  This is not possible in any other setting.

I’ve supported the arts for many years because I recognized a long time ago that if one wants to enjoy the arts, one must support the arts.  Therefore, I become a supporter of Hoson House very early on, and others may want to consider becoming a supporter of Hoson House so that it can continue to provide a completely unique musical experience for the entire community.-- Dave Belo (supporter)
