Hope for Girls and Women Tanzania

Donation protected
Hope for Girls and Women was founded by the Tanzanian activist Rhobi Samwelly in 2017. Rhobi’s personal experience of being forced to undergo female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) as a child inspired her lifelong commitment to fight for the rights of girls and women. The organisation runs two safe houses in the Butiama and Serengeti Districts of the Mara Region of Tanzania. Providing shelter and support for those fleeing FGM/C, child marriage, and other forms of gender based violence. Hope for Girls and Women actively participates in community outreach events to open up dialogue within local practising communities and raise awareness of the harms of female genital mutilation/cutting and other forms of gender based violence.

Gender based violence continues to be a serious problem in the Mara Region of Tanzania. This region has the highest rate of spousal violence in the country, affecting 78% of married women. Over 50% of adult women were married by age 18 and 32% have undergone FGM/C, while only 21% have ever attended secondary education. Governmental services to help these girls and women are limited.

I first heard about the Hope Center while watching the documentary "In the Name of Your Daughter" by Giselle Portenier. The film tells the moving story of young brave girls that run away from home and the inspiring work Rhobi Samwelly does for them. Already the Trailer will show you how challenging it is to grow up as a girl in a society where FGM/C is a deeply rooted tradition. Shortly after I decided that this was going to be my field of research for my third semester. Currently I am studying for a master's degree in African Studies at the University of Copenhagen. From this September I will be helping Rhobi for 5 month as a volunteer and independent researcher. This November and December girls are again in danger of FGM/C and we hope to keep as many girls as possible safe and to give them the chance to decide about their own future.

I hope you find this topic as important as me and will support Rhobi and the girls with your donation.

Donations will be used to provide the girls with food, clothing, medication, educational materials, school uniforms, mosquito nets, books, pens, tooth brushes, mattresses, bedsheets. Just to name a few. These girls leave everything behind when they flee from home and are therefore in need for the most basic things.
