It is a pleasure to introduce you to the girls’ basketball team of Gods Lake Narrows First Nation School. We are a team of eighteen girls between the ages of 11 and 16. Our School is located in northern Manitoba on the island of Gods Lake Narrows. We are a fly-in community with a population of approximately 3,000 individuals.
Our girl’s junior high basketball team is now actively pursuing sponsorship to attend the IEM Basketball Midget Girls Basketball Tournament in NewMarket Ontario on April 1st and 2nd, 2017. We have enthusiastic players who would love to develop their skills this year. However, our team lacks many basic items such as basketball shoes and uniforms. As most of our students come from low-income families, they have been deprived of opportunities that many other teenagers their ages are fortunate to enjoy. In addition, many of our students have never flown outside of Manitoba, which has limited the team's ability to play against other teams outside of the community. We would love to give our students the opportunity to travel to other communities not only to improve their basketball skills but to expose them to different cultures.
On November 20th, 2016 one of our teammates took her own life. This has left an emotional scar on the team. She was a loving and dedicated player. Her presence on the team will be missed by everyone. In light of this tragedy I would love to give theses kids the opportunity to discover the world outside of their community in hopes that it will illustrate that they can live and fulfill their dreams and experience self growth. I believe that this could have a lasting impact on their future because this can show them that anything is possible and achievable.
