[November 9,  2018 – Below is the original story that kicked off this fundraiser. Since then there has been much progress in defining the endowment, and I have had the chance to discuss it with Dr. Blasey herself. Please see updates 11 for important details.]

On September 27th, 2018,  Dr. Christine Blasey Ford (who uses “Blasey” professionally) carried on her career as a scholar and educator, by providing lessons in civic responsibility, courage, and using one’s knowledge to speak truth to power. Since 1995, at least, when she published her dissertation, Dr. Blasey has been engaged in research and teaching.

To honor her, particularly in her professional capacity, this is a campaign to raise funds to endow an academic chair (professorship) and/or scholarships, to be named so as to recognize Dr. Blasey.

I do not know Dr. Blasey and I am doing this on my own initiative. I will attempt to confer with her about where to locate and how to title any endowment we raise. I began this campaign on September 27th,  so that all who  can donate or publicize could immediately  demonstrate the same commitment to education Dr. Blasey so clearly has and to show our appreciation for her commitment and integrity.

I previously sponsored a capped fundraiser to assist Dr. Blasey with her security expenses. She has access to the funds and I understand she will draw upon them when she has the opportunity to do something other than hire security and prepare for hearings. Because I am not aware of her having need for further financial assistance at this time, I decided to fundraise to recognize her personal and professional accomplishments, to make sure she knows people see her as far more than "just" a victim or even survivor of sexual assault and as more than a witness in a Senate hearing.

Since starting the campaign, I have learned that $100,000 is a starting figure for a fitting academic endowment. To endow, a faculty position in Dr. Blasey's honor could cost as much as $4 million. While I do not foresee this particular campaign as achieving that sort of result, I have set our goal at the low end, because I believe we can raise at least $125,000. As of this writing (October 3, 2018) I am in contact with a few institutions that could suitably house whatever we raise in this campaign. Once details of a formal endowment are arranged, I plan and hope to publicize how future donors can contribute to it directly. In the meantime, gifts to this preliminary round are vital and much appreciated.

~Major update on the endowment to honor Christine Blasey Ford as an educator~

The American Psychological Foundation and I have completed our agreement in principle, so I can share the planned specifics of the formal agreement (currently under preparation).

By the end of the year, proceeds from this fundraiser will supply the inaugural gift to the American Psychological Foundation ( https://www.apa.org/apf/) to create the Christine Blasey Ford Research Grant for the Study of Trauma Related to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Violence, or Sexual Harassment. At least one grant annually (more if more money is raised) will go to a rising researcher working in one of these areas.

Eligibility requirements for grant recipients will be modeled on those used for the existing APF Trauma Psychology Grant, which is facilitated by the Trauma Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association ( https://www.apatraumadivision.org/).

GoFundMe will release funds raised here to me for transfer by me to the APF care of APF chief executive officer, Ashawnda Fleming, PhD. I will continue to raise funds on GoFundMe at least until the APF can create a mechanism to donate to the endowment through the APF. All funds I raise will go exclusively to the APF for the endowment.

I extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Fleming and her team; to the APF Board of Trustees, headed by Terence M. Keane, PhD; and the officers and members of the Trauma Psychology Division for their effort and assistance in creating the Christine Blasey Ford Research Grant for the Study of Trauma Related to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Violence, or Sexual Harassment. I extend deep gratitude to Dr. Blasey for her work and her commitment to civic duty, which together inspired me to commence this project. Perhaps my most fulsome appreciation goes to the hundreds of people who have trusted me to shepherd this fundraiser, who have donated to it, and who have shared word of it. You make me realize that there are many committed to truth, learning, and the common good.

Brief update on endowed research grant honoring Christine Blasey Ford

The organization with whom I have been working to finalize arrangements has been pursuing its internal procedures create a formal agreement creating the Christine Blasey Ford Research Grant for the Study of Trauma Related to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Violence, or Sexual Harassment. We are on track to announce its official establishment prior to the end of December. In the meantime, any and all contributions to this fundraiser are most welcome and appreciated.

Today, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Blasey, for the first time. She reached out to express appreciation for funds raised for her security costs in a separate GFM that I sponsored. This gave me the chance to ask if she is comfortable having her name used on the academic endowment to honor her as an educator. She not only gave preliminary approval, she expressed delight and enthusiasm about how this endowment can “pay it forward” (her phrase), providing resources for young researchers working to understand trauma.

Meanwhile, the institution with which I am working to create the formal endowment has given approval in concept. They are now proceeding with their internal processes to make sure the gift can be accepted and used consistent with donor intent. Bottom line: we are very likely to have a formal structure to announce by year end, and I hope well before.

This campaign to honor Dr. Blasey as an educator will remain open at least until the endowment arrangements are finalized. I will let you know when that happens.

Thank you, as always, for your donations and your sharing the word of this effort.

~A quick report on the effort to fund an endowment to honor Christine Blasey Ford as an educator~

Some major developments:

1. A proposal for a gift to endow a research fund to honor Dr. Blasey has been submitted to a terrific organization for formal review and finalization.
2. If the proposal works out, the money raised in the current GoFundMe effort will contribute to an endowment that will start funding at least one grant in the short term.
3. I have contacted Dr. Blasey for her approval to use her name to title the grant.
4. Pending finalization, the endowment will be able to accept further funds after the gift raised through the current GoFundMe.
5. It seems likely that the foregoing arrangements will be completed by year end.

I look forward to announcing the final specifics of the gift, the endowment, and the research grant. Thank you again to all who have donated and/or publicized this effort. This GoFundMe will remain open at least until the initial formal gift is made. After that, I will decide on the best way I can remain involved in fundraising for the endowed grant to honor Christine Blasey Ford.
