Homeless People & Animals Together

This project was conceived of, and is being overseen by, journalist Glenn Greenwald and his husband, David Miranda, a member of the Rio de Janeiro City Council. The couple currently care for 23 dogs at their home, all found abandoned and in various states of distress on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. They have spent years rescuing, fostering and finding homes for many dozens of others animals.

As part of their work on animal rescue, Greenwald and Miranda have expended substantial time, energy and resources working with numerous homeless people in Rio de Janeiro who, despite their severe hardship and deprivation, care for stray animals they found and now live with on the street. Through this work, they discovered that the bond between animal-loving homeless people and their adopted dogs, cats and other animals is both unique and profound, of immense benefit to both.

In 2015, under the Intercept’s film division led by Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, Greenwald produced two short films that profiled homeless people who live with extraordinary compassion and dedication toward their animals, accompanied by a long article on the scholarly research that has demonstrated the unique power of this human-animal bond in the context of homelessness:

https://theintercept.com/2015/10/13/dogs-forge-a-bond-with-rios-homeless-that-is-life-saving/

Miranda, as part of his successful 2016 campaign for City Council, featured animal rights as one of the key plans of his campaign, and vowed to create programs to help both the human and animal homeless populations in Rio.

But the intense, sustained economic and political crisis engulfing Brazil has made this already poor country completely unable to provide any support for its most marginalized and needy groups. As a result, Greenwald and Miranda decided to seek public support to create a new project to fill this gap – including by seeking donors in the U.S., where the strength of the dollar means that even small donations can make a major impact on people’s lives.

What they conceived of is a new type of animal shelter: one that will be staffed exclusively by homeless people who have demonstrated an affinity for animals by living with and caring for their own pets despite living on the street. The core concept is to help both groups simultaneously: create a top-flight animal shelter devoted to finding adopting homes for abandoned and homeless animals in need, while providing homeless people a purposeful job based on their passion for animals, along with a wide array of support to help them exit life on the street and find permanent employment.

We are partnering with a Brazil-based group that specializes in helping homeless people transition off the street. For every homeless person we employ, they will provide temporary housing, clothing and whatever counselling and other support they need. They will work with our employees to help them obtain identification, open bank accounts, manage their salaries, stabilize their lives, and be prepared to find permanent employment. That process will ensure that our shelter can provide vital opportunities to many homeless people as possible.

Simultaneously, we have recruited a group of veterinarians, nurses, and animal rights volunteers to provide medical care for the rescued animals at the shelter, and prepare them for adoption. A public campaign to persuade people to adopt shelter animals will be central to our efforts.

We have raised some initial start-up funding that has allowed us to hire our Executive Director: Francisco David, one-half of the same-sex couple who the Intercept profiled several months ago when he and his husband simultaneously adopted three boys from an adoption shelter.

https://theintercept.com/2017/02/06/a-same-sex-couple-set-out-to-adopt-a-child-they-ended-up-with-three/

We have also hired our first homeless person to work with Francisco: Lucas, 20, who we met after he rescued a very sick puppy clearly suffering on the street, and cared for her for months.

But now we need your help to ensure that we have the funding we need to build the shelter and begin operating it. We have partnered with a U.S. non-profit organization, Social Good, to receive donations that are fully tax-deductible in the U.S. The Brazilian non-profit entity which will manage the shelter is required to provide full public transparency for all expenses and finances.

While this shelter is based in Rio, we are particularly excited by the ability of this model to inspire other types of shelters elsewhere, as so many places in the world struggle with cruel austerity and deep cuts in public spending. By tapping into this uniquely profound bond that forms between homeless people and homeless animals, we truly believe something powerful and special can arise from it.

And we need your help to do it. Thank you.

https://theintercept.com/2016/12/27/como-a-amizade-entre-um-morador-de-rua-e-seu-cachorro-pode-salvar-a-vida-de-ambos/

https://theintercept.com/2017/02/06/casal-homoafetivo-planejava-adotar-uma-crianca-mas-acaba-optando-por-tres/

Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to find and start building at the permanent location for our homeless-run animal shelter, Abrigo Hope: a small but beautiful farm that offers the perfect environment for the abandoned animals we will care for and place for adoption. It will also serve as an animal sanctuary. Here's our new video on the progress we've made over the past several months, as well as a tour of our beautiful new location on a small farm.

(Amazingly, a 3-month-old puppy moved herself onto the little farm of our new shelter just days before we got there - she's the star of the video - so she inaugurated the shelter.) The rest of the animals we have & our employees will all be there by September 1, and we will continue to provide updates about what we are doing for both the previously-homeless employees at our shelter and the animals they care for with amazing amounts of love and professionalism:

Thanks to your generosity, we have now created a stable, fully functional homeless-run shelter for abandoned animals that is helping care for animals in need and enabling homeless people to exit the street. The 5-minute video below provides the tour of what we have been able to create.

But as we described in our last update - https://medium.com/@ggreenwald/we-broke-ground-yesterday-on-our-temporary-homeless-run-animal-shelter-73269e0e7347 - this site is temporary. We are now ready, and now need, to move to our permanent, and much larger, location: where we can help far more homeless people and animals. We need your help to do that, to continue building this model that we really believe can inspire models around the world to tap into the unique bond between animal-loving homeless people and abandoned animals, helping both.

To help, please watch our video of what we have built and contribute to our fund:

To everyone who has donated to our project to build a homeless-run animal shelter:

Thank you so much. Your support means a lot, and we have already surpassed the 15% mark of our overall fundraising goal in a short time. Your generosity has enabled us to proceed full speed ahead with the project, with confidence that we will ultimately be able to raise the funds necessary to build and operate the shelter for the first year.

Yesterday, we broke ground on what will be our temporary shelter as we obtain the property for our permanent location and then build it. I posted the story of our work, along with pictures and videos, here at this medium post for all our supporters to be updated on our project; I'm attaching a couple videos and pictures here as well:

Thanks again to everyone:

Great work done! but is there anyway for anyone reading this to help my poor dog Ricky, he is a senior dog which suddenly became paralyzed on AUG 27, the doctor said he has an infection and requires Xrays, MRI and CT Scans for diagnosis, we don't have that much money to put him through the treatment he needs, we therefore set up a fund for him and are requesting donations, View his full story and videos: https://gogetfunding.com/help-ricky-save-him-from-paralysis-and-infection/ do you all have any helping line for him, or funds that can help him, his white blood count is very high and is on antibiotics, we spent nearly $1000 and is expected to go up in costs, It will be good if you can help our poor pooch, Thanks..

Dear Glenn &David, As an animal rights advocate for many years, I appreciate your engagement in helping the humans & non-humans beings. But after visiting many animal shelters (as part of my job as a consultant in a state legislative comitee in Minas Gerais/Brasil) I have have changed my mind about taking an animal from the streets and caging it for the rest of his life. But knowing you and David a little bit, and admiring everything you do make this world a better place, I am sure this shelter will be a different one, where love and respect are cultivated on a daily basis. So, I would love to know this project closer and help in any way I can. Congratulations and all my respect for you guys!
