Homeless People & Animals Together
[Veja abaixo o vídeo e o texto em português]
This project was conceived of, and is being overseen by, journalist Glenn Greenwald and his husband, David Miranda, a member of the Rio de Janeiro City Council. The couple currently care for 23 dogs at their home, all found abandoned and in various states of distress on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. They have spent years rescuing, fostering and finding homes for many dozens of others animals.
As part of their work on animal rescue, Greenwald and Miranda have expended substantial time, energy and resources working with numerous homeless people in Rio de Janeiro who, despite their severe hardship and deprivation, care for stray animals they found and now live with on the street. Through this work, they discovered that the bond between animal-loving homeless people and their adopted dogs, cats and other animals is both unique and profound, of immense benefit to both.
In 2015, under the Intercept’s film division led by Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, Greenwald produced two short films that profiled homeless people who live with extraordinary compassion and dedication toward their animals, accompanied by a long article on the scholarly research that has demonstrated the unique power of this human-animal bond in the context of homelessness:
Miranda, as part of his successful 2016 campaign for City Council, featured animal rights as one of the key plans of his campaign, and vowed to create programs to help both the human and animal homeless populations in Rio.
But the intense, sustained economic and political crisis engulfing Brazil has made this already poor country completely unable to provide any support for its most marginalized and needy groups. As a result, Greenwald and Miranda decided to seek public support to create a new project to fill this gap – including by seeking donors in the U.S., where the strength of the dollar means that even small donations can make a major impact on people’s lives.
What they conceived of is a new type of animal shelter: one that will be staffed exclusively by homeless people who have demonstrated an affinity for animals by living with and caring for their own pets despite living on the street. The core concept is to help both groups simultaneously: create a top-flight animal shelter devoted to finding adopting homes for abandoned and homeless animals in need, while providing homeless people a purposeful job based on their passion for animals, along with a wide array of support to help them exit life on the street and find permanent employment.
We are partnering with a Brazil-based group that specializes in helping homeless people transition off the street. For every homeless person we employ, they will provide temporary housing, clothing and whatever counselling and other support they need. They will work with our employees to help them obtain identification, open bank accounts, manage their salaries, stabilize their lives, and be prepared to find permanent employment. That process will ensure that our shelter can provide vital opportunities to many homeless people as possible.
Simultaneously, we have recruited a group of veterinarians, nurses, and animal rights volunteers to provide medical care for the rescued animals at the shelter, and prepare them for adoption. A public campaign to persuade people to adopt shelter animals will be central to our efforts.
We have raised some initial start-up funding that has allowed us to hire our Executive Director: Francisco David, one-half of the same-sex couple who the Intercept profiled several months ago when he and his husband simultaneously adopted three boys from an adoption shelter.
We have also hired our first homeless person to work with Francisco: Lucas, 20, who we met after he rescued a very sick puppy clearly suffering on the street, and cared for her for months.
But now we need your help to ensure that we have the funding we need to build the shelter and begin operating it. We have partnered with a U.S. non-profit organization, Social Good, to receive donations that are fully tax-deductible in the U.S. The Brazilian non-profit entity which will manage the shelter is required to provide full public transparency for all expenses and finances.
While this shelter is based in Rio, we are particularly excited by the ability of this model to inspire other types of shelters elsewhere, as so many places in the world struggle with cruel austerity and deep cuts in public spending. By tapping into this uniquely profound bond that forms between homeless people and homeless animals, we truly believe something powerful and special can arise from it.
And we need your help to do it. Thank you.

There's still so much potential for growth and we'll continue to provide updates as we develop more. Thank you again!
(Amazingly, a 3-month-old puppy moved herself onto the little farm of our new shelter just days before we got there - she's the star of the video - so she inaugurated the shelter.) The rest of the animals we have & our employees will all be there by September 1, and we will continue to provide updates about what we are doing for both the previously-homeless employees at our shelter and the animals they care for with amazing amounts of love and professionalism:
This is a wonderfully smart initiative. It had to come from a couple of very smart journalist/city council men. Please help out and give a chance to our 4 legged angels who teaches us so much about empathy and unconditional love. Well done Glenn Greenwald & David Miranda.
Excellent idea -- it's a beautiful location -- together, the humans and the animals will create a life together going forward -- animals must be taken care of by humans -- thank you to all who are participating in this noble cause -- doctors, caretakers, donors -- thank you.
DEAR FRIENDS, Would you like to stop the agony of this world - the terrible sufferings and deaths of humans, animals and birds - radically/once and for all? - I know your answer is YES. Enough is enough! Then, please spread the following message as quickly as possible. God will do the rest. He is waiting for us to do our part of the job. Ts.Sirmanov, Ph.D. THE GREAT WORLD AMNESTY To violate a commandment of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator of the universe is not something small. On the contrary - it is very dangerous and the punishment begins to hang over the criminal as a sword. In this situation are all people, because everyone has transgressed one or more of the Ten Commandments. Examine your life in this light to recognize your sins. The good news is that the Lord offers pardon if one fulfills His conditions. Two thousand years ago, in the Roman province of Judea, according to God's plan, came Jesus Christ to take upon Himself the punishment for the transgressions, sins of people. Holy, without being guilty, He was beaten, abused, and killed on a cross to pay our debt to God. Since then everyone who repents for his sins, abandons lies, theft, murder, debauchery ... and accepts the resurrected Jesus Christ as his Master and Savior, receives complete forgiveness, and is saved from the coming wrath of God. At the appointed time such a person will receive a new body not subject to disease and death, no matter he will be alive or asleep in death. This Amnesty has been proclaimed among all peoples for nearly 2000 years. However, many signs show that its term expires. At any moment God's wrath may fall on those who stubbornly refuse to repent and continue to transgress God's law. Scripture says: "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!"

Klarenbeek confirmed that (s)he was only on the premises to deliver sick leave documentation. The leave had been taken to enable Klarenbeek to support his/her partner through the disclosure of childhood sexual abuse, within the Jehovah's Witness religion, to Australian authorities. This was occurring in the same timeframe that Klarenbeek struggled with a decision regarding chest augmentation surgery. When trying to outline the stress (s)he was under, to management, (s)he was routinely told by one manager that the details were irrelevant and should not impact job performance. (S)he was also advised that if (s)he wanted a more customer facing role, it was necessary to conform to a binary gender ... preferably the one assigned at birth. The above clearly outlines a misunderstanding, on IBM's part, on how to assist trans employees who are under duress. This may seem surprising for an organisation that advertises itself as one of the top ten corporations that supports LGBT+ diversity(1). However, closer inspection of their diversity program reveals that a "brainstorming" session, held in March 2018, to encourage LGBT+ engagement had as few as two participants(2). It also reveals that during it's "dare to be different" campaign, LGBT+ diversity was equated with diversity for the physically and mentally challenged (3). The second stated reason for Klarenbeek's termination was due to a controversial response (s)he gave during a staff feedback survey. Klarenbeek highlighted a personal level of disgust for IBM's refusal to accept responsibility for their involvement in, and subsequent profit from, the data capture which made the Holocaust possible, as reported by Edwin Black in 2001(4). To add further concern, Klarenbeek had the opportunity to speak to an individual who had been sent, by IBM, to Auschwitz in order to provide customer support. When asked why (s)he believed this issue needed to be raised, Klarenbeek stated, "we take so many of our freedoms for granted ... how can we trust our data to companies who, not only, refuse to acknowledge their role in human rights violations such as the Holocaust, Apartheid(5) and, most recently, taking five days to withdraw their support from Trump's presidency after the appalling fallout from the Charlottesville white supremicist rally(6). But they also actively try to whitewash their involvement ... and the courts allow it(5&7). All it takes for the bad guys to win, is for the good guys to be paralyzed into doing and saying nothing."
