Home for girls in Medellin

$15,676 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 143 people in 27 months
Fundacion Cultivando Sonrisas is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe home for girls (ages 0-18) in the City of Medellín Colombia. The girls we serve are at risk of physical and sexual abuse, and exploitation due to extreme poverty, and an environment which is plagued with prostitution and drug addiction, in the city of Medellin, Colombia. Their goal is to provide a safe and loving place for each girl to call home throughout their childhood and adolescents. They aim to help each girl complete their education successfully and have a smooth transition into adulthood, the way any parent would want for their own child. Cultivando Sonrisas currently rents the house where the girls live, and they will no longer be able to stay in the current house where they reside past November, due to extenuating circumstances. They have found another house they will be able to rent for the girls to live in a neighboring mountain town of Medellin called Santa Elena.

However, it is a deep desire and goal for the foundation to own property in Santa Elena, with lots of land and a large house to be able to, not only provide optimal healing and development for the girls they serve, but also to be able to expand their services to more and more children in Medellín. In 2015, they began a fundraising campaign for the future permanent home for Cultivando Sonrisas in which they raised $50,000 USD. In doing our research to build or buy a home in Santa Elena that is adequate for the current needs and has the possibility for future growth, they will need approximately $170,000 USD.  This amount is
on top of the monthly budget which needs to be continually raised to keep the girls safe and secure with all of their ongoing needs being met.

So, with the $50 thousand we have already raised that leaves us with another $120,000 USD to raise. That may seem like a huge mountain to climb, but we believe that it is more than possible. We believe in God’s faithfulness, and it has been proven over and over through the generosity of others.

Raising money for both rent and living expenses for all of our girls at the same time as raising money to buy a house is no easy task, and this is where you can truly make a lasting impact in the lives of these girls. Rather you can give $1 or $1,000 every $1 is impactful and meaningful!

Please donate as you are able, and please share our page, and tell your friends and family about the great work of Cultivando Sonrisas!

This Thanksgiving...
We at Cultivando Sonrisas want to express our deepest gratitude for your support during these 8 years. We hope you have enjoyed the daily messages and pictures we’ve shared from these girls who asked, “Who are all of these supporters and why do they care about us?” It’s each and every one of YOU! You care because you know that every child deserves love and care. They say, “It’s amazing that people who don’t even know us care so much about our lives, and help our dreams come true”
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Let’s continue this season of gratitude together on #GivingTuesday and #ChristmasFCS ♥️

Hello friends!

We’re back after a long time of not posting on here…. Some of you who follow us via social media know about what has been happening with the foundation, and what we have done over the last 6 months.

But first, we want to thank each and every one of you who has donated, who continues to donate monthly, who has donated once, twice, or even three times…. EVERY donation has been VERY important to Cultivando Sonrisas. We are hoping and working frantically for the construction of our new permanent home. You have marked our lives with your generosity, as well as the lives of all the girls who live here. Each month Marcelo, our brand embassador in the U.S, sends us the funds that have been recollected for that month via Gofundme which have gone towards covering most of our monthly costs and of course, the construction.

However, for those who don’t follow us on social (@cultivandosonrisas) we wanted to bring you into the loop and tell you what we’ve been up to!

We are finally in Santa Elena! Approximately four months ago we started renting a beautiful temporary house here, given that our circumstances in Medellin were less than favorable, having virtually no room for any of the girls to move around in. Also, while the building of our new home is happening, we thought it would be best to acclimate the girls to their new school in the mean time.

Moving to Santa Elena was a huge accomplishment for us, and the time we’ve spent here has only confirmed our decision. The girls are so joyful here- they have ample room to run and play, and we’re even adding some farm animals to our family such as ducks and rabbits. The girl’s school is nearby and the overall environment out here is very serene.

About the new building...
So, since we’ve moved out here, we’ve been able to close up the first floor, build the main staircase, build a roof for the second floor, and get a head start on the walls for the second floor. We’re needing approximately 3,000 bricks each valued at around $1.85 with labor factored in.

We encourage you to continue to donate and sharing this in your friend groups, at church, prayer circles, workplaces, etc. We are believing in faith that we’ll be able to finish construction before May 2019, since the lease for the house ends there and we cannot afford to spend any more time paying rent.

We send you greetings and hugs from the staff and all the girls in Santa Elena, we hope you’re able to visit us soon, you’re always more than welcome here. We consider you all part of our Cultivando Sonrisas family.

An Update from Cultivando Sonrisas: August 26th, 2017

We have so much to share with you all! We apologize that it has been so long since our last update, we plan to keep you updated much more frequently as we move forward with this project.

First off, we want to say thank you, to each of you that has given! We are currently in our sixth year at Cultivando Sonrisas, and each day we are so grateful that through the generosity of so many, God continues to provide for the needs that we have for each girl, on a daily basis!

Over the last several months we have been thinking and praying about what is the best course of action for us to take in regard to finding a permanent long term housing option for our girls, and that will help to ensure the growth and long term sustainability of Cultivando Sonrisas.

After much consideration, we have realized that to build or buy a house at this point in time, is out of our financial reach as an organization. The goal to find a permanent home for the girls of Cultivando Sonrisas has not changed. However, considering that we have only a few months before we have to be out of our current location, and less than a quarter of the funds we need to build or buy, we have decided that the best thing for us to do at this point in time, is to shift our focus to finding a place for us to rent, rather than buy or build, as we work to increase our fundraising efforts.

We deeply desire to own property with lots of land and a large house to be able to, not only provide optimal healing and development for the girls we serve, but also to be able to expand our services to more and more children. We know that in order for that dream to come true we need to work hard at becoming financially stable. We have many months that are financially difficult, and we wonder where the money will come from to pay all the bills. We believe in God’s faithfulness, and it has been proven over and over through the generosity of others. So, we want to continue to be good stewards of the money that has been donated towards a permanent home for Cultivando Sonrisas, and all of the money that is donated to our ongoing operational costs.

We have begun to look for homes to rent in Santa Elena which is where we desire to eventually own property. We have also decided to sell the land that we own in order to have that in the bank which will give us security in our month to month sustainability as we transition from our current house to the new house, and give us a significant start to the savings account for our permanent home for the girls.

In doing our research to build or buy a home in Santa Elena that is adequate for our current needs and has the possibility for future growth, we will need approximately $170,000 USD. This amount is on top of our monthly budget which needs to be continually raised to keep our girls safe and secure with all of their ongoing needs being met. Moving forward we are making the goal about long term sustainability, which we believe will one day (hopefully not in the too distant future) include a permanent house we own and can grown in.

I am sure you can imagine, raising money for both rent and living expenses for all of our girls at the same time as raising money to buy a house is no easy task, as we have realized very clearly in this last year. This is where we need as much help as we can get. Rather you can give $1 or $1,000 every $1 is impactful and meaningful! Please share our page, and tell your friends and family about us.

In addition, every idea someone may have to assist in raising more funds is welcomed, and we would love for you to come visit us and see the work first hand and meet the precious girls of Cultivando Sonrisas!

We are working hard down here to set up fundraising events and talking to as many people as we can about our efforts to raise the funds for a permanent home for our girls. We hope and pray that all of our friends from around to globe can join with us to help us reach our goal!

God Bless,

Cultivando Sonrisas
