Nestled in the northside of Richmond, VA, Linwood Holton Elementary has been growing extraordinary gardens for its students. The learning gardens, 'The Dandelion', were built by the hands and hearts of those who wanted our children to experience a living, learning environment. Over the past 8 years we have grown from raised garden beds to an ecosystem that garnered local recognition from City Council and the Better Housing Coalition to an invitation to harvest the White House Kitchen Gardens. To maximize the learning opportunities in our gardens, we would like to hire a part time garden educator. Linwood Holton is part of the Richmond Public School system.
The ecosystem consists of raised beds, rain gardens, a butterfly garden, native tree plantings, an edible forest, compost, a live roof, rain barrels and a bluebird trail.
An experienced garden educator would help us reach the next level and teach students how these elements interact.
Former Holton 3rd Grade Math and Science teacher, Ryan Owenby, has just this experience. He taught in The Dandelion, worked on a farm, at Tricycle Gardens and in area school gardens. He also started his own compost business. The past two months he has been working with the Holton 3rd grade to plant and harvest and teach curriculum based lessons.
As the gardens have grown, so have our needs and opportunities. With your help, we can continue a tradition of stewardship for our gardens by hiring a professional and caring garden educator.
Your donation will help fund this position that will provide a meaningful experience to all students in every grade level.
All funds will go directly to the Holton PTA - Garden.
We would like to fund this position starting in the 2017-2018 school year.
