Holler Once More!

Donation protected

We are re-launching Holler If You Hear Me, a lively and popular urban teacher memoir, in fall, 2019.

First published in 1999, this 20th Anniversary edition of Holler will be cast as a graphic novel, drawn by a talented set of Chicago high school student artists and young adults, under the tutelage of Holler’s author Greg Michie, a teacher at Seward School in Back of the Yards, and Ryan Alexander-Tanner, a renowned comic book artist.

We are seeking support to provide the 10 artists a stipend for their initial engagement with the project at an opening workshop we are holding in Chicago in mid-December.

These artists will in effect create a collage, with each chapter representing the unique inventiveness of the individual artist. Collectively they will make the stories and student voices of Holler come alive in images, informing and inspiring a new generation of educators and an audience of young folks who one day hope to become the teachers of conscience for their time.

This will be a nine-month collaboration between author Greg Michie and comic book artist Ryan Alexander-Tanner along with their publisher, Teachers College Press in New York.

Teachers College Press has pioneered the publication of serious educational books in comic book form, and this book will continue that tradition even as it breaks vital new ground. Individuals like you and a set of Chicago funders will provide the dollars for the student engagement to develop the new graphic novel material.

We hope to raise $5,000 -- $7500 to give each artist a $250 stipend to start and a set of supplies to complete the work. They will receive more funds once they submit and revise their materials for publication. For gifts of $75 and above, we will send an autographed copy of the book pre-publication.
