The Science Enrichment Program (SEP) is an interactive and engaging after-school program that exposes high school students to STEM education, health care professions, and the intersection of medicine and social justice. We provide students with hands-on science lessons, field trips, and opportunities to develop youth-led community health projects that address relevant local health disparities. There is a critical need for mentorship and role models for students who identify with groups that have historically been underrepresented in STEM and the medical profession; our goal is to provide these students with experiences and mentorship that will instill in them the knowledge that careers in science and medicine are not only within their reach, but that these fields are enriched and strengthened by their inclusion.
Event:
The SEP is taking a group of forty students to see the critically acclaimed film Black Panther this weekend! As the first Marvel film to feature a Black director, Black lead role, and predominantly Black supporting cast, the film has provided students across the country with a fantastic opportunity to discuss the impact of diverse representation in film, as well as the natural extension to other careers such as medicine. After the movie, we will be hosting a fun dinner for the high school students at Harvard Medical School, where they will have the opportunity to meet current first-year medical students and experience the rich diversity of individuals medicine attracts. Additionally, a panel of medical students will speak about their own experiences with identifying mentors, addressing issues of diversity in STEM, and discovering their passion in medicine.
Please consider helping us by sponsoring a student with a small donation of $10! Movie tickets are $15 each (technically you'd be sponsoring 2/3 of a student with $10, but tomato-tomahtoe!) and the rest of the funds will be used for buying dinner for the students.
