"The doctors think you have cancer? Justin, you're twenty-five, young and healthy.  Everything will be ok."

I couldn't believe when he told me the news...

My name is Kali Hamill.  I am a fourth grade teacher in Stafford, Virginia.  This year, I mentor a teacher named Justin Birckbichler, who recently moved to our area from Warren County, Virginia.  Justin has taught fourth grade for the past four years and has brought a wealth of knowledge to our grade-level team and to the school. Justin is a mere twenty-five years old and quite tech-savvy.  Our grade level jokingly calls him our "Google Guy."

About a month ago, Justin visited his doctor about a concerning lump in his testicles. The doctor referred him to a urologist, who recommended immediate surgery.  After the surgery and  a follow up CT scan, Justin was diagnosed with stage IIB nonseminoma cancer. The testicular cancer has spread to his lymph nodes. Due to the cancer spreading to other parts of his body, Justin was told that he would need chemotherapy to ensure that all cancerous cells are eliminated. He will begin three rounds of chemotherapy beginning November 28, 2016. After all rounds of chemo are complete, he should hopefully be cancer-free.

Justin is engaged to be married to Mallory, who is also an elementary school teacher in a neighboring county. Justin and Mallory recently bought a home in Spotsylvania, Virginia and plan to marry next summer.

Justin has medical insurance from the school district that will take care of most of his medical expenses, but he will have to pay some out of pocket. These expenses include a surgery to remove the initial cancerous mass, medical imaging, pathology, doctor visits, fertility preemptive measures, chemotherapy appointments, and follow up oncology/urology visits once over the next few years he is completely cancer free. These additional expenses, which will total at least $7,000, will add unnecessary financial stress during the next twelve weeks and beyond.

Please consider a contribution for Justin's medical expenses so that he can focus on recovering from his disease without additional financial pressures.  Justin is a teacher who is passionate about helping his students and fellow educators across the country. Please consider giving back to Justin as he has given his time and resources to so many others.

     Sincerely,

     Kali Hamill
