Miami Stadium was a true historic structure and site. Opening nite Aug 31, 1949 baseball commissioner A.D. Happy Chandler declared during his dedication speech "I know of no more beautiful ballpark anywhere than this new Miami Stadium." Over the next forty years this modern architectural marvel served as spring training host to Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers (1950-1957) Los Angeles Dodgers (1958) and Baltimore Orioles (1959-1990) The original Miami Marlins of the International League were born here April 18th, 1956 while several other minor league organizations called Miami Stadium home such as Miami Sun Sox (1949-1954) Miami Marlins / Orioles of the Florida State League (1962-1988) Miami Amigos (1979) and Gold Coast Suns (1989-1990) During it's a heyday a slew of legends played here like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Warren Spahn, Sandy Koufax, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Dennis Martinez, Cal Ripken Jr, Eddie Murray, Gary Carter, Don Mattingly and many many more.

Along with its extraordinary baseball history there were pro boxing matches held at Miami Stadium with the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson and Kid Gavilan and concerts with artists ranging from James Brown to Pink Floyd. Originally built by Cuban millionaire Jose Aleman Sr back in 1949 years later in Feb 1987 Roberto "Bobby" Maduro's name was added to its iconic facade honoring the late Cuban baseball entrepreneur.
On a personal note a healthy portion of my childhood was spent at Miami Stadium. Back in the 80s I saw countless games there and even ended up as an Orioles spring training batboy, clubhouse kid. That's your truly in the photo posted here which was taken just before the stadium was finally razed summer 2001. It has been sixteen years, a historic marker is both well deserved and long overdue. The sole purpose of this campaign is to raise funds to cover a proper official historic marker (shipping and installation) via the state for this site which is currently the Miami Stadium Apartments.
