Matt Pearce Family Fund

$93,307 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 1,460 people in 37 months

on behalf of Laura Pearce
 FORT WORTH, TX
On March 15, 2016, Matt Pearce, a police officer in Fort Worth TX, pulled over two men.  One of them was wanted with several warrants.  He shot at Matt, hitting him 7 times - once in the cheek, twice in the arm, twice in the chest and twice in the leg, with one hitting his diaphragm and liver.  His femur was fractured, and his heart bruised.  Matt was declared in critical condition when he arrived at a nearby hospital.  We, his friends, want to ensure that his immediate family - his wife and their two little girls, one barely a year old, and one three, are taken care of, and that money is the last thing on their minds during this time.

This campaign is to help our brother, friend, and hero Matt and his family through these times.  As people know who have been through events like these, there will be many hidden expenses that will not be covered, including his wife's time off work that the family will have to contend with, in addition to unknowns due to months of physical therapy, and expenses of their children.

Please consider helping make this event for Matt and his family as smooth as possible.  Thank you on behalf of Matt, his brothers, friends and family.  All funds go directly to him.

Campaign Creator Identification:
Q: Who set this up?  How do I know this campaign is legitimate?
A:  My name is Josh DeWinter. I am a friend of Matt's, and I created this campaign for him when I heard what happened.  We met in college at Washington State University, where we were in the same fraternity, Beta Theta Pi.  Look up my Facebook profile at https://www.facebook.com/josh.dewinter.1  where you will see numerous photos of Matt and I together that I have made public, including some showing me in his wedding.  Feel free to message me or even call me (please message me on Facebook for my number).

Matt has been set as the sole beneficiary of the funds from this campaign, but this is being changed.  I am in the process of requesting that his wife become the beneficiary, in the event of a long recovery where he can't use a computer, or the unthinkable happens.

Here is Laura's update today on Matt!!

Update: I know my updates have been fewer and farther between. This is a good thing!! Matt continues to make such good progress in therapy. I'm so proud of him. With all the wounds he still has healing and the pain he still deals with, he goes and does his therapy and hardly complains. He wants to get better so bad! The doctors guess that in week or so his entrance wounds we are still packing should be healed. Yay! He had his sutures in his belly removed on Tuesday and its healing great! Y'all that belly is a miracle by itself. I remember sitting in ICU and wondering what would we do if it wouldn't heal. Jesus said, "Don't be afraid, just believe". That was all I could do, and ask you all to pray and you did. And here we are :) Matt should be getting the hardware out of his mouth soon! He's excited! He's ready to eat like a normal person again. His first choice of food...he wants a hot dog! That's my love alright! We go back in 2 weeks to see about his leg and if he might be able to start putting weight on it. I'm praying they will let him. Getting him to walk is such a huge step! They told us the bone is healing great. Last but not least, Matt will have another scan in about 2 months to check the injury to his aorta to make sure it's not getting bigger or starting to bleed. The doctors say we should expect to go to Houston about that time. The doctors there will decide what to do. In the mean time, Matt should be mostly recovered. In the meantime, his blood pressure has been doing great staying down :)
Specific prayers requests:
Please pray that the rest of Matts wounds heal without issue. They've been doing great so far. Please pray they continue. It will be so nice for Matt to be rid of all his dressings!
Please continue to pray for his endurance. It's absolutely getting better I can tell, but he's still so whooped at the end of the day.
Please continue praying for his aorta. We want to claim in the mighty name of Jesus that it will heal without surgery. That is something only He can do at this point. Please pray and believe with us. We will get to know soon. I keep imagining in my mind the doctors saying he's fine and no surgery is necessary. I will keep my mind on this until I know.
God bless #teampearce

Update: Matt is making great progress in therapy. It's a little frustrating to him that he still can't use his leg since he's on weight bearing restrictions. We know once they are lifted, he will be off! In the mean time, he's working the walker like a pro! He's getting more function back in his right hand and can actually grasp larger objects with it now! Still can't quite make a fist but it's improving!
Specific prayer requests: Please pray for Matts endurance. 4 weeks in ICU has him pretty deconditioned and so it doesn't take much to wear him out. Needless to say therapy is whipping his tail but it's working!!
Please pray too for the blood clots in his legs. They are still pretty significant and are keeping his legs a little swollen. They have to be gone before they will take him off the blood thinners and they seem to be pretty stubborn.
As always, please pray for us both as we try to heal emotionally. As we get closer to getting to our "new normal" the more we realize how different things will be for us.
And last, if you would please pray for me. This may sound silly, but I'm heartsick over it: I lost my phone yesterday at Target when I went to go get some things for Matt. I don't care about the phone, but I had lots of pictures of the girls and pictures and videos of Matt throughout his recovery that I had not backed up yet. I went back to try and find it but I couldn't and no one has turned it in. All I can do is pray some how some way, it will find its way back to me. Those pictures are priceless.

I can't thank you all enough for praying for us. I was just saying the other day how when I think back to all the prayer requests for Matt, it's like they've all been checked off. We still have quite a way to go but I believe your prayers have brought him so far already. So please don't stop!

Update: Well we are officially out of ICU!! Matt was moved yesterday to the telemetry unit. He had been off his blood pressure drip for almost 2 whole days so they told us it was time. We were both a little nervous about leaving the nurses we know and love but it has definitely been a nice change. Matt is still off oxygen (hooray!) and got his wound vac off this morning. His belly incision looks GREAT! Thank you for all who prayed! He still has the 2 drains that they will remove when they start putting out less fluid. So 2 drains and a PICC line and THATS IT!! Hoping to hear more info about Houston today. We will see!
Specific prayer requests: Please pray for continued healing of Matt's belly. They just came and pulled the drains as I write this so I'm praying no complications arise. Please pray for his pain to be managed well so that he can tolerate more and more activity and become more independent. Please pray for his right arm and hand as he recovers from his nerve damage. He can move his arm well without pain but his hand isn't working that great which is frustrating him. And of course please please pray for his aorta. I'm still not really sure what to pray for or how to pray for it. My hope is for it to be healed without intervention. Since we know there is an injury there, that would be completely the healing hand of God. If he chooses not to do so, please pray for the doctors to have wisdom on how to treat him and that Matt will do well with whatever treatment they recommend. Please pray for me as I begin looking at inpatient rehab hospitals for Matt when he's ready. Pray that I choose the exact right one for him.
Thank you to all who have prayed for Matt. His spirits seem better with every passing day. He never ceases to amaze me. One if his ICU docs came to visit this morning and as we were talking, Matt told him about how after he got shot, he made up his mind that he was not going to die. Some may attribute that to a warriors mindset, but I believe that also comes from God. God gave him the will to live and God was the one telling him, "you are not going to die today, I still have plans for your life". I firmly believe that.

An update from April 8:

Update: Matt is still doing great! Got his chest tube out today and he is eating and drinking really well. Still waiting on the 2 drains and a wound vac to come off his belly incision. But I'm in no hurry there. I just want it to heal well. Which I think it must be because it's not bothering him at all. We are still waiting for news from Houston. I expect we won't hear anything before Monday. In the meantime we are just hanging out resting and building up his strength.
Specific prayer requests: Pray for Matt's strength and endurance. He obviously tires easily but we need him to get as active as possible for the sake of his lungs. Please pray for his blood pressure to be well controlled until we can get to Houston. They are trying to get him off the blood pressure drip but it seems every time they try his blood pressure goes up too high despite being given oral medication. Last, please pray for his spirit. He obviously hates being stuck in the hospital, he misses his girls, and he misses living life normally. It's also frustrating when your body can't do all that you are used to it doing. Please pray for God to overwhelm his spirit and to breathe new life into him. That he would know his value and the amazing sacrifice he has made and he would realize what a hero he is to everyone. We love you Matt! You can do this!!

Let's make sure this fund well exceeds the 50K goal. To say that Officer Pearce faces a long road to recovery is an understatement. Yesterday, this heroic man took a bullet to the heart to keep the public safe ... that's you and me.

Matt, I just wanted to reach out to you. I went through a similar situation 5 and a half years ago. I was ambushed, shot nine times and left for dead. The Lord has a plan for us all if we listen. Every day is a miracle for me. I know your experiencing some frustration. Stay positive and keep moving. Maybe my incident can give you some distraction from looking at those hospital walls. Check out rangerbrodyyoung.com or google Brody Young. This isn't to brag it's just to bring hope in your recovery. Match the frequency of the reality you want!

Pearce family, we love you, and pray for not only Matt, but for all of you, as a family. Though we may be strangers, you have been "family" to so many through this rough time. When they shoot a law enforcement officer, they injure all of us. We love our "thin blue line"..... So glad the man of house is now home. ..8-)
