On Monday August 17th, Herbert Alberts left work and was on his way home. He and his girlfriend had plans after work so he decided to leave 10 minutes early in order to meet her at their house a few minutes sooner than usual. On the freeway, he was stuck in stopped traffic in the far left lane before the carpool lane where he was hit diagonally by a car traveling 85-90MPH by themselves in the carpool lane. Below you could see the video of the accident from CBS news and you could see that the impact was so strong that there was absolutely no skid marks left on the highway. But the angle the traffic helicopter captured does not show the full damage since he was hit on the drivers side. He was driving a black Chevy Spark. The driver of the white Lexus was a pregnant 17 year old young woman, and though there is no confirmation on the reason why she was distracted behind the wheel & driving over the speed limit, her cell phone had absolutely no text messages or phone calls, meaning she most likely deleted any evidence that she indeed was on her cell phone while driving. But that is still an on going investigation.
Herbert was found unconscious when highway patrol first arrived to the scene. An officer was able to revive him until paramedics arrived. He had to be revived two more times until he finally arrived to Harbor UCLA medical center in Torrance.
His girlfriend Evelyn was still waiting for Herbert to arrive home so they could go about their original plans but when he failed to answer a phone call from her, she started to become worried because it was unlike him to take the amount of time she was waiting. She received a phone call a little later from Herb's mom Genny who had told her the news.
Herb's dad Norbert and some other coworkers of his even passed by the accident site and just made their way around the wreckage not realizing that one of the cars was Herbert’s.
Herbert was 29 years old and was the only child of Genny and Norbert Alberts.
When he got to the hospital, he was placed in ICU while the driver of the Lexus only got scratches and bruises from the accident she caused and was released from the hospital the same day, soon after she and her unborn child were examined.
When family and friends of Herbert heard the news, it felt and still feels so surreal. It is one of those things you hear on the news and/or even in a movie and think "dang that’s crazy, that sucks" but you NEVER imagined it happening to you or someone you know. At times it still doesn’t feel real, it feels like we are all waiting to be woken up from this horrible nightmare.
When at the hospital, I met a man with his 4 year old son in the ICU waiting room. He asked the reason why i was there and i told him what had happened. He then told me that his pregnant wife was in ICU for almost the same exact thing. She got hit by a distracted driver and has been in a coma since June 1st and the driver who caused the accident is absolutely fine. He told me that the doctors said the baby is fine and healthy but she is most likely not going to make it after the baby is born. The day i met him happened to be his wife’s birthday and the pain in his families eyes while they held birthday balloons was just so heartbreaking.
It is absolutely heart breaking and unbelievable that people could be so careless, irresponsible and unaware of the amount of pain they could bring upon a family by a stupid text or phone call.
Let’s be honest, we are all guilty of occasionally using our phones it’s a bad habit that has grown on most of us, some more than others. But until this life changing situation happened to us, Herbert’s family and friends realized how quickly and how damaging something so unimportant could do to an entire group of people. We tend to think we are smarter than others when doing so or that these things can’t happen to us but we are so wrong. People don’t get caught so they keep doing so until they get a ticket or something worse like this could happen. But sometimes it’s too late to learn from our mistakes.
It is so unfair, Herbert was an amazing soul who did nothing but try to make everyone around him happy. He had his whole life ahead of him. As a matter of fact, he was about to be on his way to Australia that upcoming Sunday to propose to his girlfriend Evelyn.
There are a bunch of little things to his story that make this hard to believe and accept. But they are little things we were never in control of. It is really really difficult to stay positive and not bitter about this because there is a tremendous hole in all of our hearts that could never be filled. And though we do not understand why such an amazing person was taken from us at such an early age and during such a horrible time, i know heaven just couldn’t wait for him to get home. Though we may not understand God's plans, i know he is with each of us. Herbert didn't deserve this, neither did the Alberts, Palma, Vazquez familes or Herbert’s friends didn’t deserve this pain either. We always tend to ask "Why do bad things happen to the good people?" and though i am not too sure myself, i believe God has bad things happen to us BECAUSE WE DESERVE TO GROW AND GROW TOGETHER.
Though there is no amount of money that we could raise to bring Herbert Alberts back into this world we are all hoping our story could open the eyes to many. Not only our story but the man i met art the hospital story too.
Innocent people are affected by people’s dumb mistakes. Permanent mistakes i think some people will never understand until they go through it or open their eyes to reality. Some people don’t realize how much power they have while behind their car. We do not wish the pain we are dealing with on anyone. So we are hoping that Herbert's story could help prevent people from using their cell phones and to stay hands free while behind the wheel.
Texting and driving statistics are going up each year. Meaning there are more accidents and more people that have to deal with this. and its just not fair........
As annoying and cliche as the saying is, its 100 % true
NO TEXT IS WORTH A LIFE, IT CAN WAIT
Literally anything helps and if you are unable to donate. Please pray for the Alberts, Palma, Vazquez families and friends of Herb and please help share our story so we can spread our story.
THANKS!
