Bethany "Fidgit" Hughes - seasoned thru-hiker, backpacking guide and lover of the outdoors and social justice - is close to embarking on an endeavor to travel the length of the Americas (starting in Ushuaia, Argentina and ending in Alaska) solely by non-motorized means. Triple Crowner Lauren "Neon" Reed has been a major encourager of this journey and will be joining Bethany for at least the length of South America!
En route, Bethany will gather stories of people she meets, sharing with you via the website http://her-odyssey.org/ , and she hopes to inspire others to pursue their own audacious dreams as well. The project, titled “Her Odyssey,” will work to bring attention to grassroots initiatives providing micro-financing and education to women and children in the countries along the route.
After completing a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail (2,650 miles), Bethany was more certain than ever that walking is her clearest language and best means to see, experience, and share the world. Her passion for this project springs both from the personal growth she realized on the PCT, and from her upbringing as the child of missionaries in Chile, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, viewing first-hand the inequities of opportunity among nations and between genders. Now, as an adult, she will return to these and other areas to hear and uplift others’ experiences.
Bethany has spent the past four years working multiple jobs to support herself and to put away savings for this journey, and she has saved what she anticipates will be ¼ of the overall cost of $40,000-$50,000. However, she needs our help as she endeavors to cover 20,000 miles over the next four to five years! Expenses will include traversing multiple border crossings, monthly subscription to a satellite tracker, hiring guides where necessary, transportation on the ground, etc.
The more we can raise to cover the base expenses, the more she can focus on being present in the journey and the causes with which she becomes familiar en route, rather than having to pick up side work in the off-seasons.
