Teach North Korean Refugees
My name is Ashley Heil, and my boyfriend Michael Jones and I, are raising money for an organization we have both recently joined, Teach North Korean Refugees. TNKR is a non-profit organization that helps connect English tutors with North Korean refugees in South Korea. Speaking english is a very important skill for all employees in South Korea, including North Korean refugees. Additionally, if refugees chose to, speaking English is an important skill if refugees ever choose to speak worldwide about their experience and escape from North Korea. So, Teach North Korean Refugees helps pair up refugees with English tutors to provide tutoring to these refugees. Several refugees that have participated in this program earlier have gone one to speak worldwide and write books, such as Yeonmi Park and her famous book, In order to Live, and Eunsum Kim, with A Thousand Miles to Freedom.
Because TNKR is a completely volunteer program, teaching resources, tutoring expenses, and traveling expenses are all at the expense of the tutor. In addition to this, TNKR desperately needs funds to shoulder the cost to lease buildings for the in-house tutoring, hold orientations, provide materials, and scholarships to refugees.
Although we have not begun tutoring yet (we start on Monday), Michael and I on 10/24 were matched up with 2-3 refugees, and were extremely touched by the willingness and commitment of these refugees to learn English. All of the refugees were so willing to travel to anywhere in Seoul in order to meet up with the tutors. Also, despite their own busy college and job schedules, they were all so willing to meet up at all hours of the day in order to receive this tutoring. This is going to be an incredible experience for Michael and I to help these refugees that are so committed to learning English.
Even the smallest donation would be extremely beneficial to the program and would be appreciated by myself, Michael, and the directors of the program. Thank you very much!
