"Anyone who can stand, stand now! Anyone who can help others, do so..." - Welles Crowther (1977- 2001)

I hope to one day tell the story of how the generosity of others and #S.T.I.F.F. created a shift in the educational paradigm of America. Hello, I'm Marqus and I'm an educator! I have been in education for 11 years and currently serve 1500 students as an assistant principal at a high school in the D.C. area.
Many educators find themselves still trying to break free from the clutches of student loan debt. I would like to help these community heroes by creating an organization called Supporting Teachers In Financial Freedom (S.T.I.F.F.).
Educators impart the necessary knowledge for all other occupations, yet they start out make significantly less on average than many other careers. In 2016, the average starting salary for an educator was around $36,200. The average cost of a bachelor's degree is $38,000. Educators often start their careers behind the eight ball of financial freedom because of student loans. Pair that with the fact that promotions in the field of education are often only given to those who obtain a Master’s degree or higher, forcing them to more often than not take out more loans, thus you get the perfect setup for failure. #S.T.I.F.F. would look to erase the student loan debt of these educators, but then ask them to pay it forward by donating monthly to the organization so that it could continue to help others. #S.T.I.F.F. would also look to educate high school seniors on the pros and cons of student loans and overall financial literacy. #S.T.I.F.F. would start small and move from the district level to the state and eventually support teachers in financial freedom all across America.
In education we often look at the socioeconomic impact on student achievement but never at how it affects teacher performance in the classroom. Student loans are a burden that countless educators across the country bring into their classrooms daily. Teachers trying to figure out how to manage their bills including student loans, may be focused on that very issue instead of instuctional strategies. Given this there is a possibility that paying the student loan debt of teachers could make them better educators.
These educators deserve assistance! I personally know of teachers who struggle to pay rent in one bedroom apartments in low income areas, and educators who have hour long commutes on the metro to and from work because they can not afford a personal means of transportation. These educators often give up many hours of their free time, before and after school, as there is no overtime pay in education.
I often instill in my students that all you need to do is ask for help and, that when you’re in a position to assist someone, doing something is always better than doing nothing.
I am aware that this feat is a grand undertaking and so I am appealing to any and everyone. I am documenting my efforts to one day tell the story of how the generosity of others and #S.T.I.F.F. created a shift in the educational paradigm of America. I am asking for your assistance in my aspiration to pay it forward by aiding many well deserving educators across the United States via #S.T.I.F.F. Anything you are willing to contribute to this cause is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time, patience and contribution.
