Rachel's Goal To Walk Again
Donation protected
I'm Shane, Rachel's dad, and this is her story.
Rachel was a fit and healthy, lively 12 year old girl. She went to school as normal on 10 February 2016 but had complained of a headache that morning and between classes she vomitted and went into respiratory arrest. Paramedics arrived on scene and her score on the Glasgow Coma Scale was 3(the lowest you can score). She was taken to Lewisham Hospital A and E.
A CT scan showed a brain hemorrhage causing damage to the Cerebellum. She was transferred to King's College Hospital Neuro-surgical Unit for immediate clot extraction and a External Ventricular Drain inserted. For 23 days Rachel remained in a minimal conscious state and 5 weeks in intensive care. When she awoke she couldn't walk, eat or talk and only could communcate through the squeezing of a hand and wiggling of toes for several weeks.
On the 19 April 2016 she started Neuro-rehabilitation at KCH Lion Ward and was transferred for ongoing Neuro-rehabilitation at The Children's Trust Tadworth on 21 July 2016.
Rachel still can't walk due to severe Ataxia in her trunk and upper limbs. She also suffers from Dysmetria( difficulty co-ordinating and grading movement). She also has Dysarthria which slows her speech and volume control.
I myself live in Dromore, Co. Down and have been by Rachel's bedside in England from the day of her injury. Rachel was a past pupil of Dromore Central and has only been living in England 3 years, where she attends Sedgehill Secondary and there is a possibilty that she will have to return home because of her needs.
Rachel requires intense Neuro Physiotherapy, Speech and Language therapy and Occupational therapy daily.
Funding for Rachel is going to come to an end on 21st December, so this page has been set up so we can support Rachel in exploring additional private therapies and specialist treatment to maximise her potential of a full recovery.
Rachel's goal is to be walking and leading a normal life again.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story.
